Original Press Release:

Imperx, Inc. Latest Video Capture Cards Bring Audio and HD to Laptops

Boca Raton, FL - -IMPERX released its latest family of digital laptop frame grabbers, the HD-SDI Express. The first and only laptop SDI frame grabbers in the world, IMPERX shrunk the size into 34mm and 54mm ExpressCard form factors and a single coaxial cable connector with its HD-SDI ExpressCard/34 Video Capture Card (VCE- HDEX02) and HD-SDI ExpressCard/54 Video Capture Card (VCE- HDEX01).

When used with a camera that transmits video using SD or HD serial digital interface (SDI) format, IMPERX video capture cards allow users to view and store video in real time. They capture single or multiple frames and can stamp a user message, date, and time of capture onto the video. They handle all SD and HD formats, from regular TV up to HD, including the common 720p, 1080i, and 1080p formats, and fit in any laptop that has an ExpressCard interface.

What makes these frame grabbers stand out is that they support lossless real-time capture of both video and audio.  Not only can the cards capture video, but they also capture 2 channels of 24 bit audio at 48 KHz, making it possible to use the camera's microphone instead of a separate microphone. By including the audio in the card's single input, no software is needed to mix and sync audio and video.

Along with the frame grabbers, IMPERX also provides a software developer kit (SDK) with an application programming interface (API) that allows customers to develop their own software to interface with the card and grab imagery and audio. It provides drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 and a variety of drivers to interface to third-party software tools with imaging libraries like LabVIEW, MATLAB, DirectX, and other media encoding software.

HD Video Becoming Widespread
The newest HD video standards are based on SDI, a broadcast interface, used by the motion picture industry, military, and in small surgical cameras used by the medical industry. Combined with the ExpressCard laptop interface, IMPERX enables professional-quality video capture in many new environments.

As many medical applications embrace digital video with higher quality and resolution, HD-SDI cameras are becoming common. Some IMPERX customers opt to use very small 3-chip CCD RGB cameras for endoscopy procedures that provide and record visuals at 1080p. Videos are used for medical teaching demonstrations that are rebroadcasted over private networks. IMPERX customers also appreciate using the simple coax cable connector that twists on and has better bend radius than a CameraLink cable.

Audio Feature Critical to Broadcasters
The audio capture feature of the IMPERX frame grabbers is critically important to users in the broadcast industry.  In the past, news crews would arrive at a scene of an event to film with a truck equipped with microwave dishes that were used to transmit imagery and audio back to the station via microwave.

Now that IMPERX cards can accept both audio and video, a film crew can arrive on a scene and use professional or prosumer cameras with a laptop, this frame grabber card, and a cellular modem card to gather, store, and transmit news events back to their station. All of the equipment now fits in a backpack, and a one-person crew can operate it. While a GPRS modem in the laptop may not provide enough bandwidth to transmit raw, uncompressed video and audio data, IMPERX software can compress it and create an .avi or other similar compressed stream. With this new card feature, broadcasting customers don't need expensive trucks or microwave transmitters.

The HD-SDI Express cards join other IMPERX ExpressCard laptop frame grabber families for CameraLink® and NTSC/PAL analog cameras, as well as Cardbus cards for legacy laptops and PCI Express frame grabbers for desktop computers.
