Caterpillar Releases the CD54 Vibratory Asphalt Compactor

Caterpillar Inc. of Peoria, Ill. U.S., has announced an addition to its asphalt compactor line. This CD54 vibratory asphalt compactor is intended for production-oriented customers, winning over operators with its versatile vibratory system, wide offset capability, performance in turns, and comfortable operating environment. The CD54 allows Cat dealers to continue to compete in the growing 8 - 11 metric ton class. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, industrial sites, overlays, airport runways and other medium to high-production paving jobs.

The CD54 has a standard operating weight of 9500 kg (20,944 lb) and maximum operating weight of 10 900 kg (24,030 lb). The standard compaction width is 1700 mm (67 in) and when combined with the 1.3 m (51 in) offset feature provides a total compaction width of 3.0 m (118 in) for excellent job site versatility.

The CD54 is equipped with front and rear pivoting split drums and four steering modes, making maneuverability an exceptional quality. The four steering modes include front drum, rear drum, coordinated, and crab operation. When fully offset, coordinated steering enables a 2.8 m (110 in) inside turning radius for good mobility near obstacles. The steering system combines electronic control with the feel of hydraulic. When encountering resistance, friction to the steering wheel increases, providing an intuitive feel that is extremely beneficial when operating next to vertical barriers such as curbs.

The exclusive split drum propel system enables the machine to make tight turns without damaging the hot mat. When turning, the outside drum half rotates faster than the inside drum, eliminating the potential for shoving that can occur with standard drum designs.

The four-cylinder CatŪ 3054C Turbo-charged engine provides 74.5 kW (99.5 hp) at 2200 rpm and meets U.S. EPA Tier 2 emission requirements. The water spray system features a single, 750 L (198 gal) tank that delivers many hours of operation. A sight gauge viewable from inside the cab and also from ground level allows the water tank level to be monitored at all times. System controls are conveniently located on the front control panel and a thumb switch mounted on the propel lever provides convenient on/off control. The Cat dual water pumps are designed to be the most durable water pump available. Filtration is provided by strainers located in the fill port, before the water pump and in the spray nozzles, for triple protection that minimizes clogs. The strainers are highly accessible and can be quickly removed for cleaning without the use of special tools.

The CD54 can be used on all phases of asphalt compaction, reducing the need for a variety of rollers. A switch on the steering console automatically matches amplitude and frequency for complete control from the operating station. The dual amplitude, dual frequency system provides a high frequency of 53 Hz (3,180 vpm) and corresponding amplitude of 0.34 mm (0.013 in) for higher working speeds and thinner lifts. The low frequency setting provides 42 Hz (2, 520 vpm) with corresponding amplitude of 0.62 mm (0.024 in) for thicker lifts and tougher mix designs.

The ROPS/FOPS cab with full floor-to-ceiling glass on the front and rear corners provide an unobstructed line of sight to the drum edges, drum surfaces, and both sides of the machine. The right hand window in the cab can be easily opened for additional side visibility when required. Optimum visibility to the drums enables the operators to supply the correct amount of water to the drum surfaces, but also ensures optimum view when operating in offset steering mode. The multi-position seating provides a variety of adjustments that help the operator stay focused and in control. Multiple seat adjustments allow the operator to customize weight, height, armrests, and the backrest to suit their individual needs.

These machines are designed for ease and speed of service. Daily and routine service points are accessible from ground level. Swing-out doors provide access to filters and service points. Extended service intervals reduce down time and increase machine availability.

o Maintenance-free hitch design provides unmatched reliability and the optional bio-oil capability offers an environmentally friendly alternative to standard oil.

o Tapered roller bearings in patented split drum and articulation joints are sealed for life and do not require lubrication.

o Electronic control modules (ECM) for the propel and vibratory systems are compatible with other Cat compactors, making diagnostic efforts quick and easy.

o Sight gauges enable quick checks of radiator coolant and hydraulic oil levels as well as engine air filter restriction.

o Standard pressure taps allow quick diagnosis of the entire hydraulic system.
