Emerson Motor Technologies Introduces Mod-Max Vertical Pump Motor Line

St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 30, 2002 - Emerson Motor Technologies a division of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) has redesigned its NEMA frame vertical WP-1 cast iron motor to operate at cooler temperatures and higher altitudes and with minimal noise and significantly improved mechanical flexibility.

As Emerson's premium efficient vertical motor, this product is well suited as a direct replacement for low efficient motors and may also be applied to VFD installations since it meets NEMA Part 31 standards. Mod-Max also features Emerson Motor Technologies' unique ALLGUARD® Motor Quality System.

The flexibility designed into Mod-Max makes replacing an inefficient motor a snap, because Mod-Max motors now meet the new NEMA premium motor efficiency standards, they operate 0.8 to 4.0 percent more efficiently than older, less efficient motors, resulting in significantly reduced energy costs. Several improvements have been made to the original motor design, making it one of the most robust and reliable vertical pump motors on the market. Even in brown outs and power supply interruptions, Mod-Max is designed to resist failure.

Mod-Max's new canopy cap requires no gasket and has three stand-offs to allow air circulation to help prevent moisture condensation even in hot, humid environments. Other improvements have been made to upgrade the product's pedigree, giving it outstanding reliability.

"We have made significant improvements in the overall redesign," said Douglas Toth, Director of Marketing. "The motor is more durable and it is built to the highest levels of efficiency in the industry. The most significant benefit customers will find is that we can upgrade the motor to their specifications and consistently have it available in less than 48 hours. We understand the importance of getting those pumps back up and running. We worry about the motor, so the customer can concentrate on their business."

Mod-Max also includes Emerson Motor Technologies' quality assurance system, ALLGUARD. As part of the system, the winding includes pulse endurance wire for improved life and higher temperature operation. A special treatment of "Tough Coat" to the magnet wire insulation improves abrasion resistant properties and helps to prevent insulation damage from occurring during routine winding procedures. For greater bond strength and moisture resistance, each winding is also treated with 100 percent solids insulation material. The varnish has 700 times the NEMA required humidity resistance and twice the hot bond strength of epoxy varnish. Exxon Mobil Polyrex EMTM grease is also used on all grease-lubricated bearings, providing longer life at higher loads and temperatures. Lower noise properties and good low temperature starting capabilities are also features of this grease.

Because quick turnaround time in the case of motor failure is a necessity in agricultural irrigation, industrial and municipal water applications, a number of modifications can be made to Mod-Max, allowing the upgraded motor to be normally shipped within 48 hours. Common features needed include:
* Space heaters
* Thermostats
* Oil sump heater
* Motor monitor (Status 301)
* Bearing RTD's
* Water cooling coils
* 175 percent EHT
* Vibration detector

Product inventory of Mod-Max motors, particularly in California where electricity is in short supply, is being increased to support expected high pumping needs and utility energy programs.
