Redesigned Variable Speed DC Drive Solutions from Bodine Electric

CHICAGO, IL (January, 2009) - Bodine Electric Company's range of UPM and WPM motor speed controls have been redesigned to comply with European "RoHS" Directive. Utilizing surface mount technology, these controls are now manufactured in Bodine Electric's Chicago facility. The DC speed controls complement the large selection of RoHS compliant permanent magnet DC (PMDC) gearmotors and motors available from Bodine. These compact speed controls provide a simple and economical solution for controlling fractional horsepower PMDC gearmotor or motor speed. The controls are ideal for applications that require single-direction speed pot controls such as conveyors, packaging equipment, screen-printing equipment, medical devices and lab instruments.

Unfiltered Type "UPM" DC Motor Speed Controls

The UPM unfiltered (SCR) control provides basic speed control for a wide range of PMDC gearmotors and motors. Chassis models operate from either 115 or 230 VAC (jumper selectable) at 50/60 Hz input voltage. Output voltage ranges from 0-90 VDC at 115 VAC, and 0-180 VDC at 230 VAC, with a form factor of 1.6. Eight DIP switches allow the user to easily calibrate the control for different motors sizes. UPM models are available with either ¼" quick-connect tabs or a plug-in terminal block. The enclosed version features a NEMA-1 enclosure and a manual speed pot.

Filtered Type "WPM" DC Motor Speed Controls

The WPM filtered pulse-width-modulation (PWM) control provides cooler motor operation, higher speeds and longer brush life than an unfiltered control. It operates from a 115VAC at 50/60 Hz line. Output voltage is 0-130 VDC, with a form factor of 1.0. Just like the UPM, the WPM features eight DIP switches for quick system configuration, and either 1/4" quick connect tabs or plug-in terminal connections. A new 12 VDC (in/out) OEM version of the WPM control is available for battery or solar-powered applications that operate with 12VDC PMDC gearmotors or motors.

Bodine also offers an Isolation Interface Board, model 3984, that operates with most of their basic chassis-style speed controls. The isolation and interface board allows these controls to accept analog or digital input signals from transducers, microprocessor controls, PLC controllers and other electronic control devices. Forward-brake-reverse circuitry, custom cables, and special enclosures, as well as custom factory presets, are available upon request.
