Cooper Power Systems' VACpac® Vacuum Switchgear Provides Maximum Flexibility for the Most Demanding Applications

South Milwaukee, WI, December 27, 2002 - Cooper Power Systems' designed its VACpac® vacuum switchgear to be installed anywhere, in any position. VACpac provides switching solutions for a wide variety of system applications, whether indoors, outdoors, or even submersible. The lightweight and compact size, combined with a non-combustible insulating medium, SF6 gas, enables the VACpac to deliver on its promise of unmatched flexibility and ease of installation in real-world applications.

"SF6 provides important benefits in the way of reduced size and weight, plus added versatility," said Dan Wycklendt, at Cooper. "Minimizing the space requirement is an important feature of this product, as customers can't afford to sacrifice expensive floor space with large electrical equipment."

At approximately one-fifth the size and one-seventh the weight of equivalent oil switches, VACpac switchgear provides solutions for traditionally difficult installations, as it can easily fit through manholes and vault access openings. The ability to mount the VACpac in any position on walls, floors, or ceilings maximizes the customers usable space.

Safety is also a top priority with the VACpac, which utilizes SF6 due to its superior fire safety characteristics. Because SF6 is a non-flammable gas, special building requirements such as vaults and liquid containment are not required. This makes the VACpac easier and cheaper to install when compared to mineral oil filled units.

Coupling these features with the most advanced vacuum interrupter in the world enables the VACpac vacuum switchgear to provide dependable operation and maximum flexibility for a wide variety of system applications up to 35kV. VACpac can switch or sectionalize load, loop underground systems, perform source transfers, provide tap overcurrent protection, provide transformer network protection and for co-generation applications in utility, industrial and commercial markets.

Additional customer benefits include,

o Installation time that's half as long as oil switches
o ANSI rated for underground operations
o Designed for future upgrades
o Maintenance-free operation
o A capacitor switching duty cycle of greater than 7,000 operations
