Radicom's USB Modem Modules Feature -40°C to + 85°C Operating Temperature

Embedded USB Modem Modules For Linux and Windows Based Embedded Designs Used In Commercial and Industrial Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif. - July 28, 2009 - Radicom Research, Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of dial-up and wireless RF modems for embedded systems applications, introduces its new line of operating system-independent, USB hardware modem modules featuring -40°C to + 85°C operating temperature.

The USB modem modules have received global telecom and safety agency approvals including IEC60601-1 (Medical Compliance). They are specially designed to meet the stringent requirements of commercial and industrial applications such as remote site data acquisition and medical devices.

Available in module only (V92HU) and module with RJ-11 jack and USB type B receptacle installed (V92MB-U) configurations, these modems process data using their own firmware and run completely independent of the host computer's operating system. These modems are CDC-compliant and are supported by Microsoft CDC modem drivers and Linux CDC-ACM drivers. They work with Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.

The V92MB-U measures 1.0"(W) x 2.5"(D) x 0.75"(H) installed with USB interface and RJ-11 phone jack. The modular V92HU measures just 1.0"(W) x 1.0"(D) x 0.25"(H) has no on-board jack, permitting custom jack placement. Both modem modules have improved EMC/EMI shielding and contain a hardware controller, a data pump and an international DAA (Data Access Arrangement). The international DAA in these modem modules does not draw power from the telephone line, but only draws low power from the USB connection. They thus operate reliably when line current is low due to long lines or poor line conditions.

Radicom USB modem modules have their own built-in DSP (Data Signal Processing), and support V.92 analog data, V.44 data compression, 14.4 kbps fax, and remote telephone answering machines (TAM) without utilizing host-processing power. USB 1.1 and 2.0 host controllers and hubs are supported. They are USB hot pluggable and can operate at data rate from 300 to 56K, and accept AT command set.

Compact USB Hardware Modems

"Radicom engineers designed these USB hardware modem modules at the request of OEM designers who wanted compact USB hardware modems that would work with Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems and have all the features found in larger packages," said Alex Tsau, Vice President of Operations for Radicom Research. "The results are small, low power USB hardware modems that satisfy a wide spectrum of applications."

With international DAA and RoHS compatibility these modems comply with all international standards and are ready to ship to US, Canada, Europe and other major countries.

Summary of Features:

Work with Linux, Windows and Mac OS

-40°C to +85°C operating temperature

RoHS complaint

Fax / voice playback and recording

Hot pluggable USB 1.1, 2.0 interface

Low power consumption from USB not line.

Enhanced EMC/EMI shielding

AT command set support

Microsoft CDC compliant

Linux CDC-ACM compliant

Support V.92 analog data

Support V.44 data compression

Support remote telephone answering machines (TAM)

Up to 56 kbps data speeds downstream

Line-in-use and connection detection features allow the modem to share a phone line with other equipment, eliminating the cost of a dedicated phone line, allowing field personnel to check status and receive reports on remote facilities and respond to abnormal conditions immediately.

Agency approvals: Transferable FCC68, CS03 and CTR21 certifications. IEC60601-1, IEC60950-1, EN60950 approved, EN55022, EN55024 compliant with CE Marking.

Applications

Their small size, low power consumption, compliance with international standards, improved shielding, optional RJ-11 and USB connector placement makes Radicom's USB hardware modem modules suitable for design into compact systems such as medical devices, POS (Point of Sale) terminals, gaming devices, vending machines, remote monitoring and data collection systems, industrial monitoring systems, home security networks, handheld computers, back-up communication systems and any small footprint device that needs to communicate reliably with low power consumption.
