New Silicone Compounds Developed for Electronic Applications

NuSil electronic silicones help reduce system size and weight while increasing performance under severe conditions

Carpinteria, CA and Anglet, FR - NuSil Technology, Inc., a leading source of silicone materials serving the global product design and development community, has introduced a new family of electronic silicones designed specifically for advanced electronics applications.

NuSil's R-2634 is an electrically conductive, room-temperature vulcanized (RTV) paste that maintains electrical conductivity from -115°C to +230°C (-178°F to +445°F) when fully cured. Nominal full cure time at 77°F is seven days. The material is well suited for formed-in-place conductive gaskets and grounding connections, and may be used as RF and EMI shielding in aerospace and industrial electronics applications.

NuSil's R-2940 is a thermally conductive, RTV paste that performs well over a wide temperature range, from -65°C to +240°C (-85°F to +465°F), when fully cured. Its full cure time can be heat-accelerated to 30 minutes. This compound is designed to provide physical bonding and heat transfer between electrical/electronic components and their heat sinks.

NuSil's CFI-6755 is an optically clear, RTV liquid elastomer that operates from -65°C to +265°C (-178°F to +465°F) when fully cured. Its full cure time can be heat-accelerated to as little as 10 minutes. Designed as an adhesive or encapsulant for applications where optical clarity is important, this elastomer is especially effective as an optical coupling agent or lens sealing compound.

All three materials are two-part systems requiring mixing. For best results, trapped air should be removed by vacuum deaeration prior to application. Curing occurs at ambient room temperature or can be accelerated by heating in an industrial oven. These processes are readily automated.

Advantages in Electronic Applications

Consisting of organic molecules chemically bonded to an inorganic backbone, silicone compounds combine the best physical and chemical properties of both. Fillers can be added to impart or enhance desired properties. Thus, silicones can be ideal design materials for the latest compact, lightweight electronic systems incorporating distributed power architecture.

NuSil Technology's new electronic silicone family is a case in point. Versus traditional electronic engineering materials - metals, glass, plastics, and electrical bonding agents such as solder - NuSil's electronic silicones afford space and weight savings, greater versatility, better durability, even under extreme conditions, and reduced environmental concerns.

Beyond gasketing and shielding, for example, NuSil's R-2634 can serve as a conductive cement on and between printed circuit boards, as well as a fixative for power-electronic devices and magnetic components. NuSil's R-2940 is well suited for application with encapsulated or open-frame power converters and other components to conduct heat away from microprocessors and delicate electronic circuits without adding unnecessary weight and bulk. And where optical acuity and light transmissivity come into play, such as in sighting or laser applications, NuSil's CFI-6755 may be substituted for heavier materials and mechanical fasteners.

In addition to its new, definite-purpose electronic silicones, NuSil offers over 400 fully characterized silicone formulations, and can customize these "standard" products to provide specific sets of properties. The Company's master brochure, Creative Partners in a Material World, summarizes these products, most of which are profiled on its website, Additionally, Nusil's application specialists are available to assist electronics industry designers and manufacturing engineers with their special needs.
