February 12, 2002 - TFM150 Tunable Fiber Monitor high-resolution optical time domain reflectometer has precision micro-pulse based laser output that is wavelength tunable in C band. This allows it to resolve optical events in fiber systems and components that may be only few cm apart. Applications include testing optical components such as mux, demux, and add/drop devices for DWDM systems, and measuring insertion loss and return loss in both Rayleigh and Fresnel modes.

Tempo Releases New TFM150 Tunable High-Resolution OTDR for DWDM Applications

Oakville, Ontario, Canada, January 17, 2002. Tempo, a division of Textron (NYSE: TXT), announced a wavelength tunable version of their High-Resolution Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (Hi-Res OTDR) for optical fibers and components used in DWDM optical communications. The TFM150 Tunable Fiber Monitor utilizes a precision micro-pulse based laser output that is wavelength tunable in the C band (L-band in development).

Unlike traditional OTDR's, the TFM150's design dramatically reduces instrument "deadzone" allowing it to resolve optical events in fiber systems and components that may be only a few centimeters apart.

The TFM150 adds to the growing family of Picosecond pulse based devices already available from Tempo-Oakville. Applications for the instrument include testing of wavelength sensitive optical components such as MUX, DeMUX and Add/Drop devices for DWDM systems. The TFM150 is capable of measuring Insertion Loss and Return Loss in both Rayleigh and Fresnel modes with virtually zero deadzone.

"The TFM150 adds significant capability to our current lineup of High Resolution OTDR's," said Dave Rumpakis, Product Manager for Tempo Hi-Res OTDRs. "The tunable output and extremely high resolution make this device perfect for customers needing to characterize wavelength dependent optical components and systems. We see a broad range of applications for the TFM150. The real-time monitoring capabilities of this device, excellent dynamic range, unprecedented resolution, and tunable output make the TFM150 unique in the marketplace".

Additional features include Universal Connector Interface (UCI), GPIB interface for PC control and data / waveform capture, high-definition display, and intuitive on-screen menus. The TFM150 can be ordered for the C-Band now and is available with adapters for all common connector interfaces. An L-band model is in development.
