October 18, 2007 - Part of Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture, Model 1850 offers flexible backhaul to networks in transition from TDM traffic mix to packet traffic mix. Because it has modular, hybrid architecture, operators can support TDM-based mobile traffic in present mode of operation, migrate to circuit emulation over pseudowire technology, then to Ethernet backhaul, all on same chassis. Environmentally hardened design serves as mobile access transport aggregator at BTS/Node B cell site.

Alcatel-Lucent Extends Packet Transport in Mobile Backhaul With Its 1850 Transport Service Switch

New 5 Gbit/s switch is part of Alcatel-Lucent's Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META)

BERLIN, Broadband World Forum, Oct. 8 /-- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has extended its leadership in the mobile backhaul market with the introduction of the 1850 Transport Service Switch (TSS) chassis switching up to 5 Gbit/s. This packet aggregation and transport solution provides mobile networks with cost and service efficiency at the cell site for packet and Ethernet applications, helping mobile operators dramatically reduce the cost of transporting voice and data traffic from their wireless networks. The Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS-5 is part of Alcatel-Lucent's Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META), also announced today, the industry's most comprehensive vision for the evolution of mobile networks from TDM to all-IP.

Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS' new chassis is a compact and scaleable solution purpose built to offer flexible backhaul to networks in transition from a predominantly TDM traffic mix to a predominantly packet traffic mix. Because it has a modular, hybrid architecture, operators can seamlessly support TDM based mobile traffic in the present mode of operation, migrate to circuit emulation over pseudowire technology, then to Ethernet backhaul all on the same chassis, thus minimizing their capital and operational expenditures. A key component of the Alcatel-Lucent META architecture, its environmentally hardened design serves as a mobile access transport aggregator at the BTS/Node B cell site, minimizing backhaul costs by enabling mobile operators to more efficiently address the dramatic increase in high bandwidth mobile multimedia services.

"Mobility and fixed infrastructures are increasingly moving toward packet technologies. Operators need to optimize their cost structure as their revenue per bit falls with the deployment of a host of bandwidth-hungry video and data services," stated Jason Marcheck, Principal Analyst, Optical Infrastructure at Current Analysis. "The 1850 TSS-5 is designed to help meet these challenges by providing a flexible aggregation and transport solution that leverages the benefits of a converged IP/MPLS network to streamline backhaul networks."

"As mobile operators are transforming their networks to accelerate the rollout of new, IP-based business and entertainment services, the optical transport network requires even higher degrees of flexibility and backhaul consolidation," stated Romano Valussi, President of Alcatel-Lucent's optics activities. "The introduction of this latest variant of the Alcatel-Lucent 1850 TSS confirms the role that our optical solutions play in driving this transformation as mobile service providers are facing unprecedented challenges in traffic aggregation. Its integration within the META architecture also confirms our ability to develop a premium, end-to-end value proposition to assist our customers in this competitive transformation."

The world leader in optical networking since 2001 (Source: Ovum RHK), Alcatel-Lucent is spearheading the transformation to converged packet transport. Alcatel-Lucent integrates its experience, leading portfolio and innovative vision into optical solutions that support a broad range of blended service applications such as 3G (CDMA/EV-DO and UMTS/HSPA) mobile backhaul, triple play and Carrier Ethernet connectivity. 3 UK and T-Mobile Czech are just some of the mobile operators that have selected Alcatel-Lucent's optical networking solutions, which are continuing to gain momentum in the mobile arena.

About Alcatel-Lucent's Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META)
Announced at the Broadband World Forum Europe 2007, Alcatel-Lucent's Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META) is the industry's most comprehensive vision for the evolution of mobile networks from TDM to all-IP. The META architecture allows CDMA and GSM/UMTS mobile operators to scale their networks profitably from cell site to core, delivering significant OPEX reductions. META supports diverse transport alternatives providing an evolution path to all-IP for any infrastructure (copper, fiber wireless), with integrated end-to-end management across fixed and mobile technology domains.
