January 8, 2004 - Leica HL RCâ„¢ with Rottermann Contrastâ„¢ allows contrast of barely visible structures to be observed in positive or negative relief. Light diffusing index of structures, which are invisible in environment, appear as variations in brightness. In positive relief contrast, phase structures appear elevated; while in negative relief contrast, they appear as depressions. Dynamic relief contrast allows users to toggle quickly between positive and negative effects.

Leica Microsystems Inc. Introduces Innovative Rottermann Contrastâ„¢

Bannockburn, Illinois. Leica Microsystems introduces the Leica HL RCâ„¢ transmitted light base with innovative Rottermann Contrastâ„¢, a completely new slit illumination technology. The Leica HL RCâ„¢ provides ideal lighting conditions for observation and photography with any high-performance Leica stereomicroscope, especially at high magnifications.

Observation of low-contrast specimens that are either transparent or semi-transparent (as in many molecular biology or developmental biology applications) is often difficult, especially without proper illumination. With Rottermann Contrastâ„¢, a substantial increase in contrast of barely visible structures in positive or negative relief can be observed. The Leica HL RCâ„¢ allows users to visualize even the finest structures in high contrast.

Using Rottermann Contrastâ„¢, the light diffusing index of structures, which are invisible in their environment, appear as variations in brightness. In positive relief contrast, phase structures appear elevated; while in negative relief contrast, they appear as depressions. This relief effect can be adjusted from mild to strong. The Leica HL RCâ„¢ also offers dynamic relief contrast, which allows users to toggle quickly between positive and negative effects and makes it easy to distinguish
between similar structures.

Illumination techniques other than Rottermann Contrastâ„¢ are also available with the Leica HL RCâ„¢. These include standard brightfield transmitted light, oblique brightfield transmitted light, and single-side darkfield illumination.
