AeroComm’s Powerful One-Watt 900MHz Transceivers Deliver Long Range at Low Cost

Lenexa, Kansas – May 12, 2004 – With the growing demand for increased range among local-area industrial communication applications, AeroComm has once again proven its position as the leading provider of transceiver technology by launching its affordable 900MHz AC4490-1W product. AC4490-1W provides one full watt of output allowing for data transmissions of up to 115.2 Kbps across 20 miles line-of-sight.

Priced at less than half the cost of similarly specified wireless, AeroComm’s one-watt transceiver modules and stand-alone units offer both extreme range and reliable communications. And while typical low-cost radios provide only data transmission, AC4490-1W contain a unique protocol (RF232™) to manage over-the-air concerns, e.g. interference rejection, error detection, addressing, security, and link verification.

One-watt AC4490 transceivers can be used as direct cable replacements, requiring no special host software for communication. All frequency hopping, synchronization, and RF system data transmission/ reception is performed by the transceiver. AC4490-1Ws interface via serial TTL level connection, providing transparent bi-directional wireless communication in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint, client/server or peer-to-peer (MeshRF™) networks. Additional features worth highlighting include:

Smallest one-watt transceiver module: 1.65 x 1.9 inches (48 x 42 mm).

User-programmable output power of 5mW to 1000mW.

Socket-compatible with 2.4GHz units for network-wide interchangeability.

Operable across the entire –40C to +80C industrial temperature range.

Lowest cost one-watt transceiver module: Less than $45 in quantities of 10k.

“Manufacturers of cost-sensitive industrial applications want an affordable alternative to miles of invasive cable. Unfortunately, many RF options are too costly to integrate or unreliable in the field,” said Mike Varady, Founder and CEO of AeroComm. “AeroComm has boosted the output power of our 900MHz solutions to offer these OEMs truly robust long-range wireless—at remarkably low prices.

Typical applications for one-watt transceivers include utilities, electronic signs, fleet management, lighting control and security. AC4490-1Ws are approved for use in portable applications in the U.S., Canada, Australia and South America. To suit the global marketplace, the 900MHz modules are fully compatible with a 2.4GHz line, enabling OEMs to design once and subsequently interchange radios to accommodate new markets. AC4490-1Ws are available from AeroComm, Avnet, and premier distributors worldwide.

About AeroComm

AeroComm Inc. has played a major role in the short-range RF industry for over a decade with consistent technological advances in both performance and price. The company made waves in 1994 by gaining FCC approval for the first 2.4GHz spread spectrum transceivers. Soon after, it introduced its groundbreaking $200 digital sequence commercial module. In 1996 AeroComm shifted to frequency hopping for greater interference immunity in any environment. Its innovative design techniques resulted in superior modules using inexpensive materials—producing a cost-per-module that suited vastly more applications. AeroComm broke the $100 price barrier in 1998. Responding to the growing demand for affordable yet versatile wireless, it quickly developed the first complete line of 2.4GHz OEM RF transceivers. These products were backed by the company’s own fully-automated radio testing system, measuring all critical parameters and assuring the highest quality. Today the company continues to support a myriad of applications where wireless was previously cost-prohibitive. Its robust proprietary technology, manufacturing and testing guarantee reliable communication, while lower frequencies and fewer parts allow for reduced prices.
