April 21, 2003 - Suited for use in molding and stamping/forming applications, BALINIT® LUMENA nano-layered coating exhibits hardness of 3400 HV 0.05 and thickness from 8-15 µm. In molding, wear-resistant product offers optimized ratio between hardness and internal stress as well as protection against heat penetration into tool. For stamping and forming, coating absorbs shear stress and reduces heat transfer into tool. Product may be applied at lower temperatures than CVD and TD treatments.

BALINIT® LUMENA - Challenges CVD and TD

Balzers, Inc., the global leader in PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating technology, introduces its newest TiAlN coating, BALINIT® LUMENA, a thicker coating that displays better wear protection.

The exceptional characteristics of the nano-layered coating provide significant productivity gains. Its high hardness (3400 HV 0.05) and thickness (8-15 µm) make BALINIT® LUMENA an ideal tool coating for both molding and stamping/forming applications.

BALINIT® LUMENA for molding: The coating offers an optimized ratio between hardness and internal stress as well as better protection against heat penetration into the tool. BALINIT® LUMENA displays high wear resistance, has excellent adhesion even with high mechanical loads and works well on large tools with a hardness of 40HRc and greater. The coating is beneficial for plastics with high mineral and glass content as well as in die casting applications.

BALINIT® LUMENA for stamping and forming: The coating absorbs shear stress occurring during forming of difficult work piece materials. Tools with a hardness comparable to the hardness of the work piece material are protected against abrasion efficiently. BALINIT® LUMENA reduces heat transfer into the tool even with high degrees of forming and higher hardness stabilizes the tool under high pressure loads. The coating is applied at lower temperatures than CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and TD (Toyoda Diffusion) treatments, making it a real alternative for a wider selection of tool steels.

Around the world, customers in the metal and plastics processing industries take advantage of the global market leader's know-how. Balzers has developed the PVD coatings marketed as BALINIT® and currently operates 50 coating centers at key industrial sites in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. All centers are equipped with latest generation systems to guarantee the reproducibility of the company's high quality standards worldwide.
