Walter USA, LLC Unveils New Thread Milling Cutter with Countersink

The new Walter Prototyp TMC thread milling cutters with countersink deliver higher productivity plus substantially longer tool life.

Waukesha, WI - Walter USA, LLC has announced a new version of the Walter Prototyp TMC thread milling cutter with countersink. This new version boasts several key enhancements: an extremely wear-resistant and tough ultra-fine-grain carbide; a helix angle of 27 degrees with a shortened flute run-out; internal coolant supply from as low as thread size M4; a 90-degree countersink angle; and a multilayer TiCN coating that permits higher cutting speeds and longer tool life. The new tool can be used for all materials up to a hardness of 48 HRC.

In laboratory comparisons with similar tools, the new TMC thread mill with countersink exhibited tool life improvements of 50-100%. For example, an automotive and racing company that machines M4 threads to a depth of 2XD in control arms made from 300 M material, which possesses a tensile strength of 217,550 psi, recently tried the TMC. Cutting speed for the application is 200 sfm with a feed per tooth of 0.0007-in. Using the TMC thread milling cutter with countersink they've increased the number of threads cut in a given amount of time from 80 to 145 - an increase of 81%.

In another example, a contract manufacturer machining coupling flanges made from 6150 spring steel with a tensile strength of 152,280 psi also experienced a performance increase. The components require several M10 threads cut to a depth of 0.5-in. Owing to the low tensile strength of the material, the cutting data is slightly higher in this case, at 220 sfm, with feed per tooth of 0.0014". The previous tool managed 120 threads in a set period of time while the TMC reaches almost 550.

The new TMC thread milling cutter with countersink is currently available for threads M3 to M16, from M4 and larger with internal coolant supply. An uncoated version is also available.

Cutting parameters and machining programs for the TMC can be obtained from the proven TEC-CSS tool selection and cutting data software. Its latest release, v.10.3, contains optimized values for the TMC thread milling cutter, with the number of cutting passes required by the new version of the tool reduced, depending on the particular application.
