ACP Announces Industrial "Thin Client" for Linux/Unix Applications

Linux/Unix users now have access to low cost industrial platform

Alpharetta, GA - August 20, 2002 - ACP (Automation Control Products, Alpharetta, GA) has taken the hottest selling industrial Thin Client (the Advantech 5820) and created an embedded Linux build that boots directly into Xwindows. Unlike all of ACP's other industrial Thin Clients, this unit does not need a Microsoft Windows server to boot - it simply comes up and displays the Xwindows shell. Once the unit is up and going, it can be used to display any X application.

ACP's Thin Client technology is primarily applied by customers who are running Microsoft Windows based applications on a Windows Terminal Server (such as Windows 2000) and want to put industrial Thin Client hardware in a manufacturing area. While ACP has always had a Linux module that could be downloaded to any
model of ACP Enabled Thin Client hardware, they have now taken that product a step farther and created a true stand-alone Linux build that boots without a Terminal Server.

Although the current iteration boots directly into Xwindows, future models will be available that will display a different application after the unit boots. For instance, if a customer wanted to run a Linux based human/machine interface program, the
application could be preinstalled and then that program, and not Xwindows, would be what the user sees.

The version that will be available in September starts with Xwindows and "flwm" - the Fast Light Window Manager. Flwm has a very simple interface that allows the user to start Xterm, create a virtual window, etc.

What this means to the user

Customers who are running Linux or Unix applications on a central computer can now use ACP's new industrial Linux Thin Client as the display. This is really a natural extension of ACP's dominance in the Windows based industrial Thin Client market, bringing similar "Thin Client" functionality to the Linux software community.

The Xwindows shell allows a user to start an application from any Linux computer on the network and have its display sent to one of these new industrial Linux clients. Likewise keyboard and mouse movement at the client are sent back to the application for processing. For information on ACP's new "industrial xterm" please call our sales department or send an e-mail to info@acpthinclient.com.
