IBM 7207 Model 330 External SLR60 Tape Drive Uses 1/4-Inch Data Cartridge Format

At a glance

The IBM 7207 Model 330 30 GB External SLR60 Tape Drive streaming tape drive has the following features:

Tape capacity of 30 GB native per cartridge (60 GB with 2:1 compression)

A lower capacity 5 GB native capacity tape option that is more economical for those smaller save and restore jobs

Data transfer rate up to 4 MB per second (8 MB per second with 2:1 compression)

Serpentine linear recording for maximum data integrity

Attachment to an Ultra3 SCSI LVD, Ultra2 SCSI LVD/SE, or Ultra SCSI bus — the attachment varies with server models

Internal self-test capability

Self-contained cartridge to help reduce wear and avoid contamination

Flexible read and write compatibility with certain other QIC formats

Overview

The IBM 7207 Model 330 30 GB External SLR60 Tape Drive is an entry-level save and restore device for medium-capacity fixed disk drive data and applications. The 7207 Model 330 is a stand-alone streaming tape drive in a single, externally attached enclosure, incorporating new 4-Channel Scalable Linear Recording (SLR) technology for attachment to the IBM pSeriesâ„¢ and iSeriesâ„¢ families of workstations and servers.

Key features

The Model 330 provides up to 30 GB (60 GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge, and sustained data transfer rate of 4 MB per second (8 MB per second with 2:1 compression). It has two SCSI wide input and output connectors, and attaches to the iSeries and pSeries systems using the I/O adapter or controller specific to each system model. More details are available in the Hardware requirements section.

The 7207 Model 330 has an internal self-test capability which is designed to enable the drive to verify its operation. The tape media is enclosed in a self-contained cartridge to help minimize wear and avoid contamination.

With save and restore functions for migrating files, and the ability to read and write tapes written in multiple quarter-inch cartridges (QIC) formats, the Model 330 is designed as an enhanced capacity and performance replacement product for the Model 122 tape drive. The Model 330 uses the SLR60 30 GB format, and is designed to be backward read and write compatible with SLR100, MLR3, and MLR1 — all members of the QIC family of products. The Model 330 is also designed to be read-only compatible with SLR5 and DC9250 QIC tape formats.

If greater capacity and performance tape storage is needed, consider the 3580 LTO External Tape Drive, or the 3582, 3583, or 3584 Scalable Tape Libraries, as well as the Magstar® 3590 High-Performance Tape Subsystem, and 3490 Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem. The Magstar 3590 and the 3490 are also available for inclusion in the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.

Key prerequisites

To attach to an iSeries server, OS/400® Version 5 Release 1, or later and applicable system I/O adapter hardware are required.

To attach to a pSeries server, AIX® 4.3.3 and AIX 5.1.0 or later, and applicable system I/O adapter hardware are required.

Planned availability date

September 26, 2003

Product positioning

The new 7207 Model 330 tape drive is an enhancement to the IBM 7207 Model 122 tape drive. You can use the 7207 Model 330 to replace other tape technologies (such as Mammoth and DLT tape drives) that attach externally to the pSeries and iSeries families of workstations and servers.

The Model 330 offers flexible read and write compatibility with SLR, MLR, and QIC tape formats for data exchange and software distribution internally on iSeries or pSeries systems.

Since the internal tape drive on most iSeries systems is a ¼-inch (QIC) drive format that is read and write compatible, the Model 330 offers interchangeability with many internal tape drive applications used for save/restore, data exchange, and software distribution.

The 7207 Model 330 is designed to be read and write compatible with the SLR100, MLR3, and MLR1 QIC formats, and is designed to be read-only compatible with the SLR5 and DC9250 QIC tape formats.

If you need greater capacity and performance tape storage, consider the 3580 LTO External Tape Drive, or the 3582, 3583, or 3584 Scalable Tape Libraries. Other options are the Magstar 3590 High-Performance Tape Subsystem, or the 3490 Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem. The Magstar 3590 and the 3490 are available for inclusion in the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
