TMDS Cable Driver/Equalizer suit HDMI/DVI applications.

Press Release Summary:

Offered in 5 x 5 mm packaged suited for placement directly at HDMI or DVI interface, MAX3814 TMDS® digital video equalizer and cable driver absorbs output reflections and provides 15 dB of signal-loss compensation for up to 2 m of FR-4 circuit board traces or 20 m of 24 AWG cable. Selectable current mode enables use of 200 W back-termination resistors. Allowing flexible pin assignment, all 4 inputs and outputs behave identically.

HDMI/DVI TMDS Cable Driver/Equalizer Absorbs Output Reflections and Provides 15dB Signal-Loss Compensation

The MAX3814 is a cable and printed-circuit-board equalizer plus cable driver for HDMI/DVI digital video input and TMDS output applications.

It absorbs output reflections and compensates for signal losses up to 80in (2m) of FR-4 circuit board or 20m of 24 AWG cable.

To achieve this performance, the MAX3814 provides 15dB of signal-loss compensation for long cables or circuit-board traces and offers a selectable 50% higher current mode that enables the use of 200W back-termination resistors. It is built on the same award-winning DVI/HDMI equalization technology used in the MAX3815.

The MAX3814 is ideal for notebook docking stations, HDMI inputs for HDTVs, and HDMI outputs.

SUNNYVALE, CA-August 14, 2007-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX3814 TMDS® digital video equalizer and cable driver for HDMI® and DVI(TM) applications. The MAX3814 builds upon Maxim's leadership in digital video signal integrity, established with the breakthrough MAX3815 equalizer for long DVI/HDMI cables. Though typical HDMI/DVI output drivers contribute to signal-reflection problems between connectors and high-impedance (open) HDMI/DVI transmitter outputs, the MAX3814 offers a selectable 50% higher output current for the use of 200X back-termination resistors that absorb output reflections. Additionally, its input provides 15dB of signal-loss compensation for long cables (up to 20m of 24 AWG cable) or circuit-board traces (up to 80in/2m of FR-4 circuit board). This ability to absorb reflections and provide signal-loss compensation make the MAX3814 ideal for notebook docking stations, HDMI inputs for HDTVs, and HDMI TMDS outputs.

Unlike conventional output drivers that require the separation of input/output connectors from their respective interface ICs, the MAX3814's small, 5mm x 5mm footprint allows it to be placed right at the HDMI or DVI interface. All four of its inputs and outputs behave identically to allow flexibility in pin assignment for optimal signal routing on a circuit board.

The MAX3814 is compatible with HDMI 1.3 and is available in a small, 32-pin TQFN package that is fully specified over the 0°C to +85°C temperature range. Prices start at $1.95 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit will be available to speed designs-please contact the factory for details.
