Leadis Technology Introduces the LDS285 TFT Driver Incorporating PowerLite(TM) Dynamic Backlight Control Enabling Up to 50% Power Savings in LCD Display Modules

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 23 -- Leadis Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:LDIS), an analog and mixed-signal semiconductor developer of color display drivers, LED drivers, and audio ICs for mobile consumer electronic devices, today announced sample availability of the LDS285, a 16 million color QVGA TFT driver and the first in a new family of TFT LCD drivers enabled with the proprietary PowerLite(TM) dynamic backlight control (DBC) algorithm. Using real-time calculations to determine the optimal backlight level for each image, Leadis' PowerLite(TM) algorithm communicates seamlessly with the system LED driver to save valuable power in battery-powered mobile applications including mobile handsets and portable media players.

"We're extremely pleased to introduce the LDS285, the first member of our new PowerLite(TM) line of TFT LCD drivers," said Paul Novell, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Leadis Technology. "Utilizing proprietary IP generated by Leadis, we're able to offer the optimal balance of power savings and image quality, resulting in an enhanced user experience and significant product differentiation for our customers. Together with our 1.33x-enabled LDS8861 high-efficiency LED driver, we are capable of offering customers a compelling system solution to meet their most power-stringent application requirements."

In traditional LCD module operation, the LED-based backlight unit drives at full power regardless of image content. For dark imagery, the display driver instructs the LCD array to block the majority of the available backlight, resulting in wasted power since only a small fraction of generated light is actually transmitted through the LCD array. As usage models for multimedia enabled devices continue to move toward increased use of the display, this wasted power can result in unnecessary battery drain and shortened device operating life between recharge cycles.

With Leadis' PowerLite(TM) dynamic backlight control algorithm, each still image or frame of video is analyzed using a proprietary algorithm to determine exactly how much backlighting is required to maximize power savings while still rendering a high-quality image. The calculated result is communicated directly to the system LED driver, which modulates the power provided to the backlight LEDs. For darker content, the generated backlighting can be significantly reduced, with the display driver allowing the LCD array to transmit a much larger amount of the available light compared to traditional operation. The result is display module power savings of up to 50% and extended battery life for the user.

The PowerLite(TM) algorithm also features ambient light sensing (ALS) support for additional power savings. With an external photo detector implemented to provide surrounding light conditions, the PowerLite(TM) algorithm intelligently calculates optimal backlight levels based on both ambient light and frame-specific content. In reduced lighting environments, the combination of DBC and ALS can result in display module power savings of up to 75% compared to standard solutions.

About the LDS285

The LDS285 16M color TFT LCD driver IC is a highly-integrated high-performance device with integrated display RAM, on-chip oscillator, DC/DC converter, and temperature compensation to insure optimal visual performance. Incorporating Leadis' proprietary PowerLite(TM) dynamic backlight control algorithm, the LDS285 works in conjunction with the system LED driver to save up to 50% of display module power versus traditional implementations.

In addition, the LDS285 includes programmable display features such as area scrolling, partial display, and color depth selection for enhanced screen performance.
