June 13, 2011 - PowerTrip® Surge Protective Devices include PT-PM and PT-PB series units with Voltage Responsive Circuitry(TM) that provides protection at high surge current capacities. Designed for main and sub distribution panels, they have front panels with LEDs that show green for proper operation, show red to indicate circuitry problem, and show yellow to alert of neutral to ground problem. Audible alarm sounds when protection is lost, and counter shows number of transient events encountered.

Lightning Season Is Here. Is Your Facility Protected?

As peak lightning season draws upon us, Alltec Corporation introduces a new PowerTrip® family of Surge Protective Devices that mitigate damage caused by lightning and internally generated voltage spikes.

The new PT-PM and PT-PB series devices employ Voltage Responsive Circuitry(TM) to ensure superior protection ratings at high surge current capacities. Both models have a 20 year warranty and are designed for main and sub distribution panels. The PM series has field replaceable modules for quick corrective maintenance.

Though lightning strikes represent the highest energy level disturbances a facility may experience, they make up less than twenty percent of the total damaging surge activity. Internally generated surges from processes like the powering up of equipment or induced by the flow of power over lines, which are separate but close in proximity, make up eighty percent of the damage from transient surge.

The PowerTrip® PT-PM and PT-PB series have an audible alarm that sounds when protection is lost and have a counter that shows the number of transient events that the suppressor has encountered. The front panels feature brightly colored LEDs that illuminate to demonstrate the status of each protected power phase:

  • Green = Operating Properly

  • Red = Circuitry Problem

  • Yellow = Neutral to Ground Problem

These PowerTrip® models are unique in the industry for their ability to monitor the critical Neutral to Ground connection. If the Yellow LED illuminates at any time, there could be a hazardous system wiring fault. The Yellow LED does not indicate a suppressor failure; however, it does signal that there may be a dangerous Neutral to Ground Voltage present in the grounding system.

The damaging effects of transient over-voltage include both the subtle as well as the obvious. Subtle damage (for example insulation breakdown) can occur without being detected right away. Obvious damage would be burned circuit board traces or evidence of a flashover at a panel or at an equipment location.

The primary purpose of a Surge Protective Device is to reduce surge voltages to a level that can be tolerated by the Power Distribution System and the equipment connected to the system.

The benefit of a properly designed and installed surge protection system is the reduction of premature equipment failure and downtime. The new PowerTrip® PT-PM and PT-PB series suppressors are designed to meet the demanding protection requirements of equipment operating in Commercial and Industrial environments.

Alltec Corporation is the global leader in the design, manufacture, and installation of lightning protection, grounding systems, and Surge Protection Device (SPD) technology. As Solution Providers for an Energized World(TM), they offer a comprehensive facility protection approach to solving the world's most difficult lightning, grounding, and power quality problems.
