Description

DDS Gen5 (DAT72) Tape Drive

The DDS Gen5 (DAT72) Tape Drive feature (#1105) for the IBM 7212 Model 102 is an externally attached 4mm tape drive for customers who require additional tape storage capacity for save and restore operations on their pSeries or RS/6000 systems.

The DDS Gen5 (DAT72) Tape Drive incorporates technology that uses fifth-generation (Gen 5) Digital Data Storage (DDS) tape media. The tape drive provides a media capacity of 36 GB (72 GB with 2:1 compression) physical data storage capacity per cartridge. It is designed to achieve a sustained data transfer rate of up to 3.0 MB/sec (6.0 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). In addition to reading and writing on DDS Gen 5 formatted tape cartridges, it also is designed to read and write on DDS-3 and DDS-4 tape cartridges. With its higher capacity (compared to the DDS-4 Tape Drive (#1100)), the DDS Gen5 (DAT72) Tape Drive is an excellent replacement for older IBM 4mm or other non-IBM products where higher capacity is needed.

The DDS Gen5 tape also offers improved read-channel performance, energy-saving features, and fewer components than the DDS-4 model. The DDS Gen5 features a mechanism that uses an electronic tape path to promote long life for the head, drum, and key components.

DVD-ROM drive

The DVD-ROM drive feature (#1106) is an externally attached DVD drive that gives you access to data stored on CD and DVD media.

The IBM 7212 Model 102 Total Storage Device Enclosure DVD-ROM drive is a 5.25-inch, half-high device. It is designed to:

Read 640 MB CD-ROM and 4.7 GB DVD-RAM media.

Be used for Alternate IPL (IBM-distributed CD-ROM media only) and program distribution.
