Simple Method for Monitoring the Rate of Orally Disintegrating Tablets (ODT)



Brookfield Engineering announces the introduction of its spring loaded probe adapter designed to measure the rate of decay of Orally Disintegrating Tablets. Commonly called ODTs, they are an oral delivery system that can be taken by mouth anywhere because water is not needed. Cough drops are one example, but recently ODTs have been developed to deliver many other kinds of medication.

The concept of the spring loaded probe adapter is to lightly touch the tablet, pressing until the spring is compressed a distance equal to the length of the tablet. Appropriate liquid is then added. As the tablet disintegrates the spring relaxes. This probe adapter takes advantage of the natural force linearity of the small spring inside the probe adapter to relate the decrease in force to the shrinking size of the tablet. The total time for the tablet to dissolve is measured.

This probe adapter works well on Brookfield's CT3 Texture Analyzer, making yet one more effective application on this versatile, low cost machine.
