November 13, 2002 - Model BOH 80 2.1 D 60 brushless, aerostatic spindle incorporates Motorized Bearing Technology and is available with either collet for tools with 0.5 mm shaft or Dorn taper for extreme accuracy. Spindle offers high stiffness of 9 N/microns axial and 14 N/microns radial with speeds to 60,000 rpm. Unit is balanced to G 0.4 standards and is suitable for dicing semiconductor wafers.

'Motorized Bearing Technology' Improves Spindle Stiffness and Performance

Lavon, Israel -- A brushless, high speed aerostatic (air bearing) spindle featuring high stiffness and low runout has been designed, by Colibri Spindles, Ltd., for dicing hard and soft materials. Incorporating Colibri's "Motorized Bearing Technology" (MBT), the BOH 80 2.1 D 60 spindle is available with either a collet for tools with a 0.5 mm shaft or for extreme accuracy a Dorn taper. Quiet and smooth running, their high stiffness (9 N/microns axial and 14 N/microns radial) and high speed (60,000 RPM's) makes these ideal spindles for dicing semiconductor wafers. Balanced to G 0.4 standards, low friction, and precise axis definition typical of aerostatic bearings, the spindles give longer tool life and unsurpassed surface finishes.

The Colibri spindles also feature a "dynamic Coals contactor" for determining the height of the cutting tool. Electrical current is fed through the spindle shaft from the control system, through the machine base, and back to the controller providing the operator with the height of the tool over the work piece. Brushes used to transmit the electrical current to the shaft are held in place by air pressure. These brushes are needed only a short time during setup, then the air pressure is reversed and they are lifted off the shaft, preventing brush wear and contamination from particles.
