Space-Saving Chokes feature IP66 rating.
November 4, 2008 -
Designed for use with inverters, chokes restrict incoming current on line side and are suitable for rough environments such as rail vehicles/oil platforms. They can be fitted outside inverters, reducing internal inverter temperature and eliminating need for cooling fans. To simplify mounting, choke and mounting plate are fitted on device's outside and connecting cables pass through sealed opening. Coating protects components from direct sunlight, sea water, rain, and corrosive gasses.

Chokes with Protection Class IP66 for Inverters - Energy-Efficient and Space-Saving
Graben-Neudorf, Germany, September 2008. SMP Sintermetalle Prometheus GmbH & Co KG is introducing a range of chokes designed specifically for use with inverters. The special feature of these units is their ingress protection class of IP66, which makes them suitable for use in rough environments, for example in rail vehicles or on oil platforms. Chokes have the function of restricting incoming current on the line side.
Because of their degree of protection IP66 these chokes can be fitted outside the inverters, which means that the heat generated by the choke is not discharged inside the inverter. This results in a lower internal inverter temperature, which removes the need for cooling fans, saving both energy and installation space. Placing the choke outside the inverter has the further advantage of reducing the inverter's overall dimensions, which further cuts space and energy demand.
For the choke itself external mounting has the benefit of allowing it to be designed for lower ambient temperatures. While inverters, for example in railway applications, can have an internal temperature of 70 to 80 °C, the outside temperature to which underfloor-mounted electronics are exposed is unlikely to exceed about 40 °C. SMP has developed chokes for external mounting even for use on offshore oil platforms. Their special protective paint coating protects these components from direct sunlight, sea water, rain and corrosive gasses.
To simplify mounting outside the inverters, SMP provides the chokes with special mounting fixtures. The choke and the mounting plate are fitted on the device's outside and the connecting cables pass through a sealed opening.
For use in power electronics, power generation, and instrumentation and control, SMP supplies chokes and filters for frequencies up to 200 kHz and current ratings up to 1000 amperes. Depending on their application, they are constructed either as single-conductor chokes for high-current applications, individual chokes, choke modules or LC filters. SMP's inductive components offer a high energy storage capacity at low volume, reduced losses, good EMC characteristics and a cost-conscious design. All SMP components are manufactured to customer specifications using in-house developed powder composites. To allow for a wide range of requirements, components can be made to all common standards. All products are RoHS- and WEEE-compliant and the materials used are UL-listed.

Company information:
SMP Sintermetalle Prometheus GmbH & Co KG develops and manufactures inductive components and magnetically soft materials, cores and mouldings. Based in Graben-Neudorf near Karlsruhe, Germany, the company was founded in 1982 by Vasilios Gemenetzis and today employs 180 people. SMP has become one of the key global providers of magnetically soft materials for industrial applications, serving customers throughout the world. In the USA, SMP products are available from Westendorf Associates, Inc.
SMP's product range includes low-loss inductive custom components based on in-house-developed powder composites, such as filter, commutating, step-up converter, power recovery and single-conductor chokes. Many of its products are used in the railway industry. Several tonnes of SMP chokes, for example, are contained in the inverters for the state-of-the-art ICE 3 units' three-phase asynchronous motors. The market for inverters for photovoltaic systems - which feed solar energy into the electricity grid - is also experiencing strong growth.
Ever since the company's foundation, research and development has been a key aspect of the company's philosophy. For its innovation management, SMP received the Special Award of the TOP 100 initiative, which distinguishes Germany's hundred most innovative medium-sized enterprises.
