Texas Memory Systems Doubles the Capacity of the 'World's Fastest Storage' With its New RamSan-325 Solid State Disk

HOUSTON, TEXAS, November 9, 2004 – Texas Memory Systems, Inc., manufacturer of the World’s Fastest Storage®, announced today availability of a new solid state disk model, the RamSan-325. The 250,000 I/Os per second RamSan-325 is available in capacities of 128 gigabytes, 96 gigabytes, 64 gigabytes, and 32 gigabytes. The RamSan-325 addresses growing requirements for higher capacity solid state disk systems and extends Texas Memory Systems’ scalability and density advantages over competing solutions.

The RamSan-325 can accelerate I/O intensive applications such as databases up to 2500% by delivering random data at sustained rates exceeding 1.5 gigabytes per second. Applications that benefit include OLTP (online transaction processing), OLAP (online analytical processing), modeling, and data acquisition. Typical RamSan users include corporations in the financial, telecom, broadcasting, and e-commerce sectors as well as government, military, and research organizations such as Japan's highly respected Nara Institute of Technology.

"The RamSan-325 meets the immediate needs of Nara Institute of Technology whose application requires 128 gigabytes to support a single file," said Teruo Yamada, CEO of System Create, Texas Memory Systems' resale partner in Japan, "The customer was willing to wait for the higher density system to be available before buying."

The higher capacity RamSan-325 solid state systems allow organizations with large database files to store the entire file on a single LUN, rather than splitting the data across several systems. The higher storage density of the RamSan-325 also allows a terabyte system to be built with only 8 units, rather than 16 units. This means high capacity systems are more space efficient, easier to manage, and affordable to own. By comparison, the RamSan-325 has more than three times the storage density of the closest competing solid state disk.

"We've already sold a number of terabyte and half-terabyte solid state systems this year," said Woody Hutsell, Executive Vice President of Texas Memory Systems. "Demand for these higher capacity units has gone up considerably as the user community has applied solid state storage to a broader range of applications."

"Increasingly, IT departments are using solid state disks strategically within their storage networks to accelerate critical database applications," said Randy Kerns, Senior Partner at the Evaluator Group – an analyst firm specializing in storage. "Solid state disks are used alongside hard disk-based systems and are traditionally purchased for speed, not capacity. However, the growth of databases is now driving demand for speed which can be provided by high capacity solid state systems."

The RamSan-325 is a non-volatile solid state disk. Its high availability architecture includes redundant and hot swappable power supplies, redundant batteries to provide power in the event external power is lost, and a four disk RAID with hot swappable backup hard disk drives that stores data that is flushed from memory. Texas Memory Systems’ unique Active Backup™ feature allows users to simultaneously benefit from the solid state drive’s superior performance and the hard disk drives' persistence by constantly backing up memory to the internal RAID without affecting application performance.

The RamSan-325 is as easy to install as an ordinary disk drive system. The RamSan-325 can be used by a single computer, with a host bus adapter, or by hundreds of computers on a fibre channel storage area network (SAN). Full monitoring and configuration capabilities are available over any browser via a protected Java applet. The RamSan-325 is fully SNMP compatible.
