UGS Announces New Solid Edge Motion Simulation and Animation Features

Solid Edge Version 19 leverages UGS' D-Cubed technology to communicate design function in real time

PLANO, Texas - UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced enhancements to motion simulation and animation within Solid EdgeŽ. Solid Edge Version 19 leverages UGS' own D-Cubed technology to realistically simulate motion of assemblies and mechanisms through the Assembly Engineering Manager (AEM).

Solid Edge is the CAD component of the new UGS Velocity Series(TM) portfolio. The D-Cubed AEM component provides a streamlined capability to perform fast and accurate motion studies. Complementing additional new capabilities to explode, render and animate designs, motion simulation tools let Solid Edge users animate complete product function, utilizing components such as gears, pulleys and hydraulic cylinders while applying motors to generate movement.

"By combining full motion simulation with exceptional capabilities to explode, render and animate designs, Solid Edge customers can reduce design errors and the need for expensive physical prototypes," said Adrian Scholes, director of Solid Edge marketing, UGS. "In addition, this technology improves collaboration among design review teams, project engineers/leaders, manufacturing engineers, process planner and service teams."

Used together, Solid Edge's motion, explode and rendering tools enable users to create exceptional animations and presentations. Dynamic 3D motion files communicate design ideas, create technical illustrations in maintenance and repair manuals and develop clearer assembly manufacturing instructions and training videos.

Built on UGS' own D-Cubed technology, part of UGS' PLM Components portfolio, AEM is designed for integration by CAD vendors at the core of their CAD systems. By continuing to leverage D-Cubed technology in Solid Edge, UGS further extends the position of the world's leading supplier of components to the CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM application development community.

The AEM enables motion simulation in Solid Edge assembly environment, which supports two critical workflows. First, it helps design teams communicate ideas, represent large complex assemblies and create technical illustrations in maintenance and repair manuals. Second, it captures photorealistic animations as standard AVIs to improve assembly manufacturing instructions and training videos.

The AEM satisfies the rigorous demands of engineering design processes in Solid Edge through these key features:

provides accurate solutions directly on solid models, not using faceted approximations,
creates motion through pre-defined elements, such as motors, as well as interactive dragging with the mouse,
automatically simulates genuine 3D contact behavior between all geometry types,
computes twisting motion as contacting parts separate,
provides immediate results through interactive performance,
enables assembly/disassembly verification and
supports contact-based mechanisms, previously difficult to fully simulate in a CAD system.

In addition to the AEM, D-Cubed develops a family of geometric software components that enable key functionality in CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM applications, including sketching, part and assembly modeling, motion simulation and hidden line visualization. For more information, visit ugs.com/d-cubed.
