New Custom Software from Altru-V Optimizes Ultraviolet Selection for HVAC Design and Maintenance

V-Smartâ„¢ software enables optimization of design and product selection to reduce energy costs and improve performance while accelerating return on investment.

Valencia, California, March 3, 2003— ALTRU-V™ product line introduces two new V-Smart™ software programs, to help take the confusion out of the selection and application of ultraviolet (UVC) products and solutions for HVAC design and maintenance. For more than a decade it has been known that proper application of UVC destroys bacteria, viruses and mold, helping to safely and efficiently maintain the near-new status of HVAC equipment, resulting in lower energy costs while providing cleaner air. However, until recently, effectively designing or retrofitting HVAC systems with ultraviolet products has often been confusing and frustrating, at best. V-Smart software eliminates frustrations by answering questions such as how much UVC is required, what output performance is necessary, and how long it takes to pay for itself.

According to Dave Witham, vice president of New Technology for the ALTRU-V product line at UVDI, "Our new software programs eliminate the confusion by helping designers, building owners and facilities managers to streamline the decision-making process. The user just needs to type in the key variables to quickly figure out exactly what products to use and how many lamps to apply to a given system to determine the energy savings and shortest period for payback for the ALTRU-V products." The software also enables the user to produce multiple scenarios with colored printouts to compare and contrast potential solutions."

The V-Smart software, which was written by the renowned technology leader in UVC application, Dr. Kowalski of Penn State University, comes in two distinct parts. The first, V-Smartâ„¢ Select software takes basic coordinates, such as plenum height, width and in-line space, and uses this information to tell the user how many fixtures to use and what size, providing precise locations for the fixtures that produce the maximum UVC energy distribution. The software will print out a color-coded, UVC output annotated graph that shows the distribution of energy in actual microwatts per square centimeter and projected kill rates for common fungal microbes. The V-Smart Select software also has a model of an optimized installation, which can serve as a point of reference.

The second part of the software, V-Smartâ„¢, Save, provides a simple but accurate return-on-investment (ROI) calculator that can provide the HVAC professional, from operator to engineer, with information regarding energy savings as well as optimization of maintenance and equipment life. It will calculate cooling and pressure losses, then summarize them into energy economics for annual savings and payback, which is often less than one year.

Software Benefits Detailed

Features and benefits include:

• Calculates number of UV fixtures required and their size

• Directs the installer as to optimum placement of the UV fixtures

• Prints a colored graph showing the distribution of UV energy and typical disinfection rates

• Estimates your system's cooling capacity before and after use of UV or uses actual system measurements for energy calculations

• Calculates energy savings due to improvement in system pressure drop

• Summarizes all of the resulting improvements in dollars

• Calculates costs and savings for an instant projection of payback

About ALTRU-V Products:

ALTRU-V provides a full line of products for retrofitting as well as for new installations. The V-Modâ„¢ product delivers UVC energy to the coils, drain pans and plenum through El modular design, allowing for maximum application flexibility in systems of almost any size. The V-Strikeâ„¢ product provides a supported lamp design, allowing for exterior-mounted applications in systems of up to 10 tons. The V-Flexâ„¢ system provides high-intensity surface and air stream disinfection with a "nestable" design that can emit energy in every direction (360°).

The Real Science behind UVC:

The real science behind UVC begins with the Veloz family and a legacy of over 70 years of cutting-edge innovation in UV technology. In the 1930's, Luis Veloz, an engineer with Westinghouse's Lighting Division, led the first use of UV technology in air purification, and later in water purification. In 1949, he founded Aquafine Corporation where Luis and his son Tom teamed up to build the company. Tom Veloz continues the family tradition today as the founder and president of UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) formed in 1992.
