Makino Releases EDcam Version 5

Upgraded offline program solution software provides greater options for sinker EDMs.

AUBURN HILLS, MI-September 2008-Makino has launched version 5 of their popular EDcam(TM) offline programming Software, providing shops with more options in a wider array of applications. This update adds to features from previous versions, upholding the value of continuous machine run time and operator multi-tasking.

New features for EDcam version 5 include expanded model data, machining conditions technology upgrades, and new electrode material types to encompass a larger number of application needs. The software is adjusted to meet the needs of more modern machine options, such as carbide machining, Z-axis stabilizers, and micro-cell EDM. Other additions include a wider selection of cavity types, including through-machining, rib, open side, connector, pin gate, speaker grill, EDM after pre-cut, and more.

The user interface has been simplified into a logical series of data entry dialogs, instead of the single data entry prompts of previous versions. To accommodate operators that prefer separate spreadsheets, an EPX data import feature has been added, providing one-click data entry in lieu of the normal manual step-through of the dialog prompts. This update has also been modified to be fully compatible with all Windows Vista(TM) systems.

EDcam Services

Makino's EDcam is a software solution released in 2003 for sinker EDM machines to reduce human error in burn programs, reduce potential scrap, increase shop efficiency, and reduce programming time up to 70 percent. The software acts as communications manager between CAD-CAM systems and the sinker EDM's NC program, eliminating potential operator errors due to manual input procedures.

Operators utilizing EDcam can multitask their time, initiating a burn program while beginning preparations for future burns on a remote computer. EDcam retrieves information on electrode offsets and offline workpieces in a coordinate measuring machine, where the operators can transfer the data for program use. The software is user friendly and requires little or no training on an EDM machine to develop programs.

With EDcam, the information is taken directly from the part drawing or CAD-CAM system and placed into the burn program without any human intervention. This essentially provides machine shops with full offline programming capabilities, perfect for any automated system.

Makino is a global provider of advanced machining technology and application support, where new thinking takes shape for the metalcutting and die/mold industries. Makino manufacturing and service centers are located in the United States, Japan, Germany, Singapore, Italy, France, Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, China, Mexico, Brazil and India, and are supported by a worldwide distributor network.
