Novell Simplifies Server Migration to Linux

Novell improves file performance and sharing while simplifying migration of core workgroup services to Linux

SAN FRANCISCO (LinuxWorld Conference & Expo)—09 Aug 2005—Novell today announced the availability of an enhanced Novell® Open Enterprise Server featuring performance advances and improved migration capabilities that simplify moving the enterprise to Linux*. Open Enterprise Server now makes it even easier for NetWare® and Windows* customers to move key workgroup services like file and print to Linux, all at once or gradually. As a result, customers benefit from an open, flexible and cost-effective migration to Linux, including cost savings from efficient hardware use and the flexibility to deploy open source technologies.

“We're constantly looking for ways to reduce our total cost of ownership and bring us a big return on our investment, and Novell's huge commitment to the whole Linux environment, from workstation to enterprise server, has been like a gift to us,” said Tony Cape, desktop facilitation team manager for the Senate of Pennsylvania. “For example, moving to a Linux desktop was out of the question until the Novell Client for Linux in Open Enterprise Server appeared. We now have the ability to reduce our costs even more by not being locked into one workstation operating system.”

Novell Open Enterprise Server is a secure and reliable suite of services that delivers proven file, print, directory, management, collaboration and application services. In addition to simplified migration to Linux, new enhancements include increased performance of Novell's acclaimed Novell Storage ServicesTM running on Linux, and Novell iFolder® 3.0, enabling file sharing along with personal file backup and anytime, anywhere access. The Novell Client™ for Linux is also available in Open Enterprise Server, allowing secure authentication, access to services and applications, automatic drive mapping, and other key processes previously only available to Windows desktops, now on Linux desktops.

“Open Enterprise Server lets customers use integrated upgrade and migration utilities to easily and cost effectively select the platform mix that is best suited for their needs,” said David Patrick, vice president and general manager of Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services for Novell. “Customers want choice, and Novell Open Enterprise Server delivers.”
