IBM LoadLeveler for Linux V3.3 Delivers Improved, More Flexible Job Scheduling

IBM LoadLeveler for Linux allows users to run more jobs in less time by matching processing needs with the available resources.

Building on LoadLeveler's proven capabilities, V3.3 adds the following enhancements to provide improved, more flexible scheduling, and to support new platforms:

Improves scheduling capabilities, giving administrators more control over their jobs

Reduces the number of environment variables LoadLeveler has to copy, reducing the time needed to prepare jobs

Reduces or eliminates wait time in the queue by allowing specific node resources to be reserved for exclusive use by particular users

Allows jobs to be preempted so a higher priority job step can run

Is supported when run with SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 9 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 or 4 on specified IBM eServer servers and Intel-based blades

Is supported when run with SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 9 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on IBM pSeries servers and IBM BladeCenter with POWER-based blades

Is compatible with LoadLeveler for AIX 5L for heterogeneous cluster situations

Overview
LoadLeveler® for Linux is a versatile workload management system that allows you to run more jobs in less time to get the most out of your resources.

With LoadLeveler, users can view a cluster of systems as a single computational resource, dispatching jobs and balancing the workload across various systems in the network with optimum productivity. By matching each job's priority and processing requirements with the available resources, LoadLeveler optimizes resource utilization and job throughput. LoadLeveler offers:

An easy-to-use GUI that enables users and administrators to build, submit, and prioritize jobs, and to view the status of jobs and machines online.

Controls and accounting mechanisms that enable users to limit jobs to specific resources and to track and adjust job accounting parameters.

Ability to handle network and system outages without losing information because its extensive failover and self-repair capabilities provide stability, reliability, and scalability.

An API that allows the end user to plug in their own scheduler, to enable an alternate scheduling algorithm and providing flexibility.

LoadLeveler for Linux supports an interoperable environment with LoadLeveler for AIX 5L. When the central manager runs on AIX 5L, both AIX 5L and Linux nodes can be mixed within the same cluster. LoadLeveler can then dispatch jobs to run on both Linux and AIX 5L servers.

LoadLeveler V3.3 is focused on ease of use, efficiency, reliability, and availability. It provides the following enhancements:

Ability to specify a fixed system priority for a job step by administrators

Ability to configure the central manager, providing more control over the scheduling process

Job launch enhancements with increased flexibility and processing options

Advance reservation, allowing administrators and authorized users to schedule exclusive use of node resources

Support for preemption under the backfill scheduler

Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Support for IBM eServer® servers with Intel® EM64T processors

Key prerequisites
Any one of the following IBM eServer servers:
IBM eServer pSeries® servers and BladeCenter® with POWER®-based blades running SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 9 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4

Specified IBM eServer xSeries® servers, BladeCenter Intel-based blades, eServer 325 or 326 servers, and IBM eServer with AMD Opteron or Intel EM64T processors, running SUSE LINUX Enterprise System 9 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 or 4.
