New 'Smart' Technology Makes Patient Data Collection Easier, More Efficient

Pearson Introduces Docuscan Patient History System With Digital Pen Technology

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., Sept. 4 / -- Today Pearson introduced the Docuscan Patient History system, a new innovative solution for digitally capturing patient information that is convenient for patients to use and easy for medical office staff to administer.

The Docuscan Patient History solution with Paros(TM) technology enables digital capture of patient history information. Using the progressive yet simple digital pen-and-paper technology, patients just fill out forms as they normally would, and the technology automatically collects and records the data for use by the medical office staff.

The proprietary Paros technology integrates capabilities of digital pen and paper from Anoto® and character recognition from Vision Objects' MyScripts®, along with Pearson's proven data capture technology. The digital pen records what is being written on the unique paper that is designed and printed by Pearson.

"Staff, nurses and physicians at medical offices and clinics are required to collect patient information at every visit, creating a demand to continuously update electronic medical records," said John Harnett, president and CEO of the Data Management group of Pearson. "The Docuscan Patient History system puts digital tools in the hands of patients so the data are captured while patients are simply completing a form -- as they are used to doing when they visit the doctor."

Other medical data collection systems require patients to use kiosks and other methods they are not likely used to and often find intimidating and difficult to use. Medical office staff members are also frustrated by the need for extensive training required by some data collection systems. With Paros technology, all of these objections are eliminated because it is no more complicated than using pen and paper.

"This new data capture solution demonstrates Pearson's commitment to providing innovative ways of digitally capturing information. The Docuscan Patient History system provides a seamless interface to electronic medical records systems and improves workflow," added Harnett.
