Verdiem Unveils SURVEYOR 5.0 to Help Global Businesses Accelerate Cost and Carbon Savings

Power Saving Software Offers Sophisticated Management of Energy Consumption Across Complex PC Networks

SEATTLE, May 14 -- Verdiem, the leading developer of power management software for PC networks, announced today the public availability of its upgraded SURVEYOR software, helping global businesses reduce energy consumption and their IT carbon footprint. The new version of this award-winning product provides IT managers with additional tools to tackle common IT energy management concerns such as reliable patch management, remote access and PC insomnia. The result of these enhancements is centralized management of IT energy waste and a reduction in PC energy consumption by as much as 60 percent. SURVEYOR also offers a fast and easy way to demonstrate social and environmental responsibility through significant energy savings without undergoing a complete energy overhaul.

"Environmentally conscious IT organizations are realizing that they can meet environmental goals with the same activities that address long-standing operational mandates -- reducing costs and driving efficiencies," wrote Christopher Andrews, Senior Analyst at Forrester Research, in the April 2008 report "Hot Companies to Watch in 2008". "And while most user companies are focusing on making their data centers more efficient, Verdiem helps tackle more distributed IT infrastructure outside of the data center."

A typical PC consumes 588 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, with two-thirds of that power wasted when the computer is not in use. Furthermore, 60 percent of network PCs are left running after hours in businesses worldwide, with 80 percent of end-users disabling their PC's power settings after 60 days. Verdiem's SURVEYOR manages this energy-waste problem by intelligently placing PCs and monitors into lower power settings when not in use while providing an on-demand facility to reliably wakeup PCs for IT administrative functions.

"We offer global businesses a solution to minimize IT energy waste, cutting energy bills while significantly reducing the company's IT carbon footprint," said Kevin Klustner, president and CEO of Verdiem. "We understand the complexity of enterprise networked organizations and continue to evolve SURVEYOR to empower companies with the tools they need to cut operating costs and achieve sustainability goals."

SURVEYOR can save an organization up to $60 per PC, per year, meaning a company with 10,000 PCs could save more than 2,000,000 KWh of electricity (enough to power more than 200 residential homes) and more than $600,000 on energy bills in one year. With today's upgrade, SURVEYOR provides IT managers with the following new features:

-- Systematic resolution of PC Insomnia: PCs often do not consistently transition to lower power states due to application nuances, or spurious network, central processing unit (CPU) or disk activity. Often referred to as PC insomnia, it's a difficult problem to solve since many applications still incur CPU usage even when idle, therefore preventing the PC from adhering to most hibernate scenarios. SURVEYOR implements a supplementary timer to define idle time based on CPU, network and disk threshold levels. This can be set centrally to enforce sleep or hibernate on insomniac PCs for maximum energy savings and compliance with corporate power policies.

-- Seamless Remote Desktop Access: With the number of remote and mobile employees representing a growing percentage of the workforce, SURVEYOR now includes Wake-on-Web. It is a web interface that allows remote users to easily wakeup their remote machines and gain reliable access to their network while staying within the context of corporate security standards.

-- Customizable Profiles: Within any given enterprise there are numerous PC usage patterns, also called profiles. SURVEYOR is expanding its auto-grouping capabilities to enable profiles to be set for groups of laptops. This allows IT administrators to centrally control and accommodate the nuances of mobile usage patterns. Windows Vista(TM) power management settings can also be incorporated in the profile definition for greater flexibility in configuring system response to power management functions.

-- Reliable patch management: When combined with Surveyor Wakeup for SMS, environments with SMS/SCCM can synchronously wakeup machines that have pending advertisements. This can help dramatically increase reliability of system-wide updates. Administrators can also schedule machines for wakeup even though they are not Wake-on-LAN capable.

SURVEYOR 5.0 is readily available for enterprise implementation and can be purchased directly from Verdiem. For more information and to calculate the savings possible with SURVEYOR, visit www.verdiem.com/ or http://greenmypcs.com/.
