Captaris Announces General Availability of Industry's Only TIFF iFilter for Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007
New Software Leverages Full-Text OCR Technology to Address Growing Problem of Enterprise Search and Discovery
BELLVUE, Wash., Sept. 15 -- Captaris Inc. (NASDAQ:CAPA), a leading provider of software products that automate document-centric processes, today announced the industry's only TIFF iFilter for Microsoft Office SharePoint(R) Server 2007. Captaris put to use its powerful OCR engine to enable the new TIFF iFilter to conduct full text search and retrieval of image documents alongside Microsoft Office and other electronic documents. The new product was developed in response to a direct request from Microsoft's customers for TIFF support in Office SharePoint Server 2007. The Captaris TIFF iFilter supports Office SharePoint Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express.
According to industry analyst firm Gartner, "On average, professionals spend 50 percent of their time looking for information." This number will continue to grow as more and more content is being fed into the enterprise and for businesses that have a high volume of scanned or faxed-in documents the search and discovery process is an overwhelmingly burdensome task.
The first of a series of products coming from Captaris that help businesses achieve document driven process automation, the TIFF iFilter fits into the initial phase of the process, which is the starting point where documents are fed into SharePoint. From the initial phase, the next steps to document driven process automation include routing, capture and process. Over the next few months, Captaris will introduce an entire suite of products that address each phase of the process and each product is designed from the ground up to support Office SharePoint Server 2007.

The TIFF iFilter uses the Captaris OCR engine, RecoStar, which is a full page reader, to automatically crawl SharePoint indexed libraries, lists and folders to capture and send the results to Microsoft's indexing engine. Once indexed, the images can be searched through Office SharePoint Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express. The engine also provides automated image enhancement and pre-processing features to produce high-quality, searchable images.
