Smart Drive controls winders and rewinders.

Press Release Summary:

URC Unwind/Rewind Control measures outside diameter, mass, and inertia of coil every revolution. When coil reaches user-defined diameter, system enables or disables events, based on customer specs. Program is embedded within controller of company's drive, eliminating need for external control rack. When used with programmable controller, drive forms work cell that can stand alone or be integrated with other automation cells in control system.

Improve Reliability, with Consistent Tension From The Unwind/Rewind Smart Drive

Franksville, WI - UNICO, Inc. announces the release of the (URC) Unwind/Rewind Control "Smart" drive. UNICO has taken over 34 years of experience in industrial applications and designed the URC specifically for controlling winder and rewinder applications. The program is embedded within the controller of a UNICO drive, eliminating the need for an external control rack. When used in conjunction with a programmable controller, the drive forms a powerful automation work cell that can either stand alone or be easily integrated with other UNICO automation cells to build a complete control system. Embedded control reduces system complexity while taking full advantage of the exceptional performance, flexibility, and ease of use of UNICO drives.

The URC software module can be embedded within various UNICO drives, from the low cost 1105 to the high performance 2400. Both AC and DC drives are available in ranges of 1 to 1000 Hp.

The URC continuously updates its system calculations by measuring the outside diameter, mass, and inertia of the coil once every revolution. When the coil reaches the user-defined diameter, the system acts as an early warning device by enabling or disabling certain events, based on customer specifications.

The URC also has a built in dynamic inertia compensation, which is calculated to provide smoother acceleration and deceleration of the coil. The URC can also detect a broken material strip or a clock-springing coil and a fault will warn the operator reducing risk of damage to the machine. The flexibility of the URC is evident in the tension set-up, which can be configured to provide either forward or reverse tension depending on the application. The URC also has separate adjustments to provide independent control over tension while threading material and while running. In addition, the URC comes with Underpeel/Overpeel Control. This feature allows coils to be wound or unwound without dictating how the coil must be loaded into the line.
