High Tech Smart Cameras Continue to Steam Ahead

Vision Components, Ettlingen, Germany expands established Smart Camera Series with the release of the VC4038 model.

The real-time ready, network enabled VC4038 industrial smart camera, the first member of the VC40xx series, targeted for use in applications for industrial, medical, mechanical engineering and robot applications.

As with all of the earlier camera generations the company stays with proven feature sets and combines it with ever faster DSP processors and storage media with higher performance.

With 3200 MIPS on-board DSP computational power, it is able to capture and process 126 frames in 2x binning mode or 63 full frame images in a second.

It features increased 32 Mbytes of on board SDRAM image/data memory with 4 Mbytes of flash EPROM for data and program storage with significantly higher access time than in previous models, 128 MByte SD card, process IOs, outputs for lighting control, progressive scan CCD, instant triggering, full-frame integration, electronic shutter, Fast-Ethernet and RS232.

The camera has a High Speed trigger input with absolutely constant capture delay, which allows jitter-free images even at very high speed.

The built-in 800x600 resolution SVGA video output with 8 bit color overlay can serve as user interface for setup or visual aid during processing.

The VC4038 is equipped with a variety of communications protocols including TCP/IP, UDP, FTP, SMTP, socket support, a Telnet-server and an HTTP server.

Pre-emptive multi-tasking makes it possible to run several processes at the same time; so the user can change parameters on the fly without any impact on the inspection or communication process. The VC4038 is ideal for real-time image processing functions such as run-length encoding, object labeling, filtering, blob analyses and many others.

Using the powerful VCRT and VCLIB vision tools along with CCS from Texas Instruments, developers can quickly and simply create their smart camera application on a Windows development host, and upload it into the smart camera and run the application self-contained in the camera. Working with Vision Components SDK on a one time license is a unique opportunity for OEMs in the industry to significantly reduce cost.

The wide application areas include mechanical engineering applications, gauging, object recognition, 2D code-reading, 3D measurements, security applications, motion capture and analyses, robot vision.
