September 12, 2006 - Offering automatic in-process regeneration (IPR) of grinding wheel, EWAG EWAMATIC line grinds and erodes round tools and inserts in PCD and carbide. Direct-drive C-axis workhead (PEK axis) lends to overall grinding precision and productivity. Using torque motor results in axis speeds to 1,000 rpm. While max wheel size is 11.8 in., max clamping power is 7,000 N. Automatic hydraulic compensation system ensures workpiece remains perfectly parallel.

World's Most Versatile Small-Tool Grinder Comes to IMTS with New Features

EWAG's EWAMATIC LINE can grind AND erode round tools AND inserts in PCD AND carbide, making it the world's most versatile small-tool grinder. Now the machine offers automatic in-process regeneration (IPR) of the grinding wheel for up to 30% faster cycle times. The IPR system automatically senses when the grinding wheel becomes loaded and applies a regeneration stone to open the grit. This compliments EWAG's unique expertise in grinding diamond with diamond in order to achieve mirror finishes.

Another new feature is a direct drive C-axis workhead (PEK axis) for increased grinding precision and productivity. Switching from a worm gear drive to a torque motor not only increased positioning precision, it took the axis from 16 to 1,000 RPM. This should enable cylindrical grinding in operations like grinding a chamfer on an insert. Plus the maximum usable wheel size increased to 11.8" (300 mm), clamping power increased from 2,800 to 7,000 Newtons, and an automatic hydraulic compensation system ensures that the workpeice remains perfectly parallel. The machine already achieved accuracies within 1.5 microns, so improvements will be difficult to measure.

See the machine in the United Grinding booth, B-6700 in the North Building.

United Grinding is the North American arm of Körber Schleifring and has two main offices. The factory in Fredericksburg handles EWAG and Walter tool grinders and measuring machines, while the Ohio facility supports Studer, Blohm, Jung, Mägerle, Schaudt, and Mikrosa cylindrical and profile grinders. The Körber Group as a whole has over 8,000 employees worldwide and over a billion dollars in sales. Visit United Grinding at www.grinding.com.
