TGW Launches New Generation AS/RS Crane
New Mustang Evo is the latest generation of TGW's stacker cranes for automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), combining nearly 30 years' experience with new approaches of handling machine engineering
Spring Lake, Michigan - TGW-Ermanco, a leading integrated logistics solutions provider, has released the Mustang Evo, the next generation of the company's Mustang single-mast automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). The all new Mustang Evo combines well-proven technologies with fundamentally new approaches of handling machine engineering to create one of the fastest AS/RS solutions in the industry.
The Mustang Evo is a single-mast crane with a maximum payload of 100 kg (220 lbs) and an optimum height of 12 m (39 ft). These height and weight specifications allow it to meet the requirements of more than 70 % of all mini-load AS/RS solutions.
Using the same lightweight construction design as the Mustang, the Mustang Evo combines newer technologies and engineering approaches new to stacker crane construction. According to Del Deur, Director of Product Development at TGW, this next generation AS/RS is stronger than the Mustang, but also much lighter. "The idea with this next generation AS/RS was to create a machine that is not just better and faster than the Mustang, but also more energy efficient."
The Mustang Evo uses aircraft construction concepts, reducing its overall weight by about 25%. Much of this comes from a new mast construction design, where specially rolled profiles, consistently adapted material thickness and high-strength bolted connections make the mast three times stiffer yet lighter than the Mustang. The chassis, chassis frame, and lifting unit were reinforced and re-engineered using this weight-optimized design.
Further enhancements in the Mustang Evo come from improvements to the crane's center of gravity, better distribution of loads to the running wheels, and the elimination of drive motors at the top of the machine. "Having fewer motors reduces the maintenance and lowers the overall operational costs of the Mustang Evo," added Deur. "This adds to the improved energy efficiency as well."
The combination of the higher stiffness of the mast, the improved center of gravity, and the placement of the friction wheel drive at the bottom rail allows the Mustang Evolution to reach maximum speeds of 6 m/s (19.7 ft/s), even with a height of 12 m (39 ft), making it one of the fastest AS/RS solutions in the industry. Combined with a lifting acceleration of 3 m/s2 (9.8 ft/s2) and a maximum lifting speed of 3 m/s (9.8 ft/s), the Mustang Evo is the new standard for high performance in automated storage and retrieval applications.
