Signaling Gateway Gives Service Providers Improved Call Control Options for Voice and Data Applications
DÜSSELDORF, Germany - October 2, 2002 - CommWorks, a 3Com Company (NASDAQ: COMS), today said it has achieved certification from Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications company, for its signaling system 7 (SS7) gateway. The CommWorks® 4007 SS7 Gateway, a key module within the CommWorks Softswitch, allows service providers to deliver improved intelligent call control for voice and data services.
Certification was achieved after extensive lab testing at Deutsche Telekom, and was required to demonstrate the gateway's ability to handle variants in communications signaling and networks in different countries. The CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway is now certified in 20 countries around the world; and is deployed by service providers in the United States, New Zealand and Thailand.

Today's basic dial-up data call is typically carried from Class 5 switches over T1/E1 signaling trunks on the circuit-switched network. With CommWorks' SS7 data offload application, service providers can put voice and data signaling onto the SS7 overlay network via less expensive intermachine trunks (IMTs).
Service providers that deploy the CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway are also positioned to offer new revenue-generating services, including unified communications, voice-over-IP and PC-to-phone functionality. The gateway allows service providers to leverage existing features and services in the PSTN SS7 network and integrate those services with IP-based networks.
