October 21, 2002 - Model 4007 SS7 Gateway serves as bridge between Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Internet Protocol (IP) networks by translating signaling information between them. Existing PSTN SS7 network features such as 3-way calling, call forwarding, caller ID, and local number portability can be integrated with IP-based networks. With SS7 data offload application, users can put voice and data signaling onto SS7 overlay network via intermachine trunks (IMTs).

Deutsche Telekom Certifies Commworks® SS7 Gateway

Signaling Gateway Gives Service Providers Improved Call Control Options for Voice and Data Applications

DÜSSELDORF, Germany - October 2, 2002 - CommWorks, a 3Com Company (NASDAQ: COMS), today said it has achieved certification from Deutsche Telekom, Europe's largest telecommunications company, for its signaling system 7 (SS7) gateway. The CommWorks® 4007 SS7 Gateway, a key module within the CommWorks Softswitch, allows service providers to deliver improved intelligent call control for voice and data services.

Certification was achieved after extensive lab testing at Deutsche Telekom, and was required to demonstrate the gateway's ability to handle variants in communications signaling and networks in different countries. The CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway is now certified in 20 countries around the world; and is deployed by service providers in the United States, New Zealand and Thailand.

The CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway serves as a bridge between the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Internet Protocol (IP) networks, translating signaling information between the two networks.

"With growing interest in migrating voice, data and other applications to IP-based networks, the ability to bring SS7 efficiency and intelligence to the IP world is extremely important to service providers," said Sudhakar Ramakrishna, vice president, Wireline Data and IP Telephony Solutions, CommWorks. "Our signaling gateway allows service providers to integrate the existing features of the PSTN SS7 network - three-way calling, call forwarding, caller ID, local number portability - with their IP-based networks. This integration of SS7 and IP provides an important step toward a converged network infrastructure."

By helping to integrate SS7 into an IP network, the CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway offers service providers a more efficient and effective way for handling increased call volumes, through voice and data offload for IP telephony and dial up networks. This solution is of particular interest to service providers looking to reduce costs and add value to low-margin dial up services.

Today's basic dial-up data call is typically carried from Class 5 switches over T1/E1 signaling trunks on the circuit-switched network. With CommWorks' SS7 data offload application, service providers can put voice and data signaling onto the SS7 overlay network via less expensive intermachine trunks (IMTs).

Service providers that deploy the CommWorks 4007 SS7 Signaling Gateway are also positioned to offer new revenue-generating services, including unified communications, voice-over-IP and PC-to-phone functionality. The gateway allows service providers to leverage existing features and services in the PSTN SS7 network and integrate those services with IP-based networks.

The SS7 signaling gateway is a key element in the CommWorks Softswitch, a comprehensive product line consisting of openly connected software modules that provide signaling, call control and treatment, and service creation in a distributed network architecture. Softswitch components perform intelligent call handling between media gateways and/or between IP-based user-agents, independent of access (wired, wireless, narrowband or broadband), medium (video, data, Fax, voice), and speed. Service providers can customize IP-based voice networks based on products that support a variety of call controls: H.323, SIP, H.248/Megaco, SS7 or any mixture of these. This gives service providers a high degree of flexibility to design and deploy IP networks, as well as to create and support a variety of new services.
