Servo and Spindle Hardware promote position accuracy.

Press Release Summary:

Modular Level-Up αi series includes spindle amplifiers, servo motors, power supplies with continuous output up to 100 kW, and 1-3 axis servo amplifiers with HRV4 control and minimal heat generation. Servo amps use single fiber optic cable to connect up to 16 servo axes, and all units utilize energy-saving power source regeneration. Servo motors utilize permanent magnet rotor, while motor-mounted, 16 million ppr encoders feature error correction learning functions.

Original Press Release:

Next Generation of Alpha i Servo and Spindle Hardware is Introduced by GE Fanuc Automation

Level Up αi Servo System Provides Increased Performance While Maintaining Full Upward Compatibility With Original αi Line

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - June 9, 2005 - GE Fanuc Automation, Inc., a unit of GE Industrial, is announcing the availability of the next generation of servo and spindle hardware to compliment its Nano-CNC controls. The Level-Up power supplies, servo amplifiers, spindle amplifiers and servo motors provide increased performance over the already impressive Alpha i series while maintaining full upward compatibility with the original Alpha i (αi) line-up.

"The modular ai series has been the performance standard in CNC machining since their release five years ago," said Paul Webster, GE Fanuc Servo Product Manager. "The level-up release increases performance and accuracy while maintaining the same compact size, easy connection and award winning energy saving features of its predecessor."

The modular Level-up αi series contains highly efficient power supply modules with large output of up to 100kW continuous. Spindle amplifier modules and 1-to-3 axis servo amplifier modules featuring large maximum output, high-speed HRV4 control and low heat generation.

Servo amplifiers use a single fiber optic cable to connect up to 16-servo axis and all units utilize energy saving power source regeneration, Webster said. Level-up servo motors feature optimized core designs with an internal permanent magnet rotor for high output and very smooth rotation. Motor mounted 16 million pulses per revolution encoders that feature error correction learning functions to achieve 1/100,000rev. positioning accuracy round out the line-up.

New features of Level-up FANUC Servo αi series include:
- αiPS series LEVEL-UP version (200V& 400V models)
· Level-up type Power supplies have larger output capacity: 20% increase in maximum power and 10% increase in peak power over the current type PS.
· Power failure detection function is added at level-up type. This function simplifies the system of gravity axis drop prevention function at power failure.
- αiSV series LEVEL-UP version (200V & 400V models)
· Servo HRV4 control is supported with combination with Series 30i / 31i/32i CNC.
· In HRV3 control, past restriction to maximum torque is removed.
· High torque with low loss intelligent power module
· 16 axis per FSSB line is supported with Series 30i/31i/32i.
- αiSP series LEVEL-UP version (200V& 400Vmodels)
· Increased rated current specification with Level-up type Spindle amplifier.
· 12 kHz high frequency PWM rate.
· Lower heat generation in spindle motor.
· Spindle HRV4 control with precise position control and high speed current loop
- αiS series LEVEL-UP servo motors
o Modern Internal permanent magnet structure cancels the magnetic unbalance
o Smooth rotation by optimized magnetic circuit design and inherently balanced rotor
o Increased power by utilizing rare earth magnets
- αi Level-up Pulsecoder (used on αiS series servo motors)
o Impressive 16 million PPR resolution
o Improved accuracy of Pulsecoder α16000iA by using a learning circuit
o Absolute position accuracy of 1/100,000rev. is now realized

"These amplifiers will become the standard Express offering for use with all GE Fanuc series 16/18/21-iB, PMi and 30/31/32i-A CNC controls," said Webster. "Standardizing on one modular amplifier series will allow fo rthe most ease of integration across product lines for the machine tool builder and retrofitter while providing increased and cost-effective performance."
