Harris Corporation Announces Launch of Leitch NEXIO(TM) XS SD/HD Server System

Unique Platform Delivers SD/HD Support and Range of Encode Options in Single, 3RU Frame

CINCINNATI, April 4 -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today announced the launch of NEXIO(TM) XS, a unique, modular transmission server system that offers standard- and high-definition (SD/HD) support, integrated, "agile" software codecs with an extensive range of compression formats and back-to-back DV/MPEG playout -- all in a single, 3 rack unit (3RU) frame. The latest addition to the highly successful Leitch NEXIO(TM) server platform, NEXIO(TM) XS features all-software codec technology, integrated editing applications and front-panel access to drives, making this the most advanced, streamlined, easy-to-use, SD/HD server system available today.

"With the launch of NEXIO(TM) XS, broadcasters finally have a cost- effective, efficient solution for managing SD and HD content from ingest to playout," said Tim Thorsteinson, president of Harris Broadcast Communication Division's Leitch Business Unit. "Unlike the available alternatives, NEXIO(TM) XS does everything internally in a single, 3RU chassis. No external coders or decoders are required, no I/O-to-storage bridge devices are needed, no third-party editing systems are necessary -- and the system's unique software codec technology makes adding compression formats as simple as a software upgrade."

The NEXIO XS server system connects to the NEXIO(TM) storage area network (SAN), providing broadcasters with a streamlined infrastructure for producing, processing, distributing and managing SD and HD content. Designed on a seamless codec model, NEXIO(TM) XS enables back-to-back playout of multiple formats on a single timeline and is able to encompass new codecs the moment they become available. It provides an extensive range of I/O types, integrated applications support and encode options, including Long GOP MPEG2 at SD and HD resolutions, DV25, DV50 and IMX. Front-panel access to boot and media drives, as well as USB and IEEE-1394 (FireWire(R)) ports, makes NEXIO(TM) XS easier to use and service than other available options.

The NEXIO XS server easily scales from two channels to well over 100 channels, thousands of hours of shared storage and hundreds of megabytes per second of IP network bandwidth -- all within a single NEXIO(TM) SAN (domain). Ensuring maximum reliability, Emmy(R) Award-winning Leitch RAIDsoft(TM) storage protection supports multiple drive failures using its ECC Parity software RAID controller.

Adding high definition to an existing NEXIO server system is a simple matter of adding NEXIO XS servers configured for HD operation to the NEXIO(TM) SAN using Fibre Channel optical fiber connectivity. As NEXIO(TM) XS can store both HD and SD content on the same shared-storage file system, there is no need for a separate storage system or for system reconfiguration.

The NEXIO XS server system is available with a choice of external or internal storage:

NX3600HDX SD/HD Shared Storage Server
A 3RU, standard- and high-definition server platform that connects to the NEXIO(TM) shared SAN, the NX3600HDX provides up to six baseband channels per chassis; dual-port, redundant, 4Gbps Fibre Channel interface; and USB, FireWire(R) and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. It supports both 1080i and 720p formats over HD-SDI (SMPTE 292M) and 525 and 625 over SDI (SMPTE 259M) interface. Ingest and play-out control is enabled via Leitch embedded or third-party applications. NXOS operating software, RAIDsoft(TM) license, channel control, Digitize and Transfer Manager applications are included. Supplied software supports easy media import and export, including MXF file support.

NX3600HDI SD/HD Integrated Storage Server
A standalone, 3RU, standard- and high-definition server platform with internal hot-swap storage, the NX3600HDI provides up to six baseband channels per chassis and USB, FireWire(R) and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. It supports both 1080i and 720p formats over HD-SDI (SMPTE 292M) and 525 and 625 over SDI (SMPTE 259M) interface. Ingest and play-out control is enabled via Leitch embedded or third-party applications. NXOS operating software, RAIDsoft(TM) license, channel control, Digitize, Playlist and Transfer Manager applications are included. Supplied software supports easy media import and export, including MXF file support. The NX3600HDI can be used as an independent storage domain, for redundancy, or as an edge server in a central- casting system for small, ingest and play-out applications requiring integrated storage.
