May 18, 2009 - Models SP3495E/SP3496E/SP3497E are high-speed 3.3 V RS-485/RS-422 transceivers supporting 20 Mbps applications and those up to 32 Mbps. They are designed for balanced data transmission and handle bidirectional communication on multipoint/multidrop bus transmission lines. Up to 64 devices can be connected simultaneously on bus. Short circuit protection/thermal shutdown forces driver output into high impedance state if output current exceeds 250 mA or if junction temperature exceeds 165°C.

Exar Adds High Speed 3.3 V RS-485/RS-422 Family to Expanding Serial Transceiver Portfolio

Capable of 32Mbps - Ideal for Next Generation Industrial Automation Platforms Requiring Accelerated Data Throughput

FREMONT, Calif., May 4 / / - Exar Corporation (NASDAQ: EXAR) released a family of high speed 3.3V RS-485/RS-422 transceivers - the SP3495E, SP3496E, and the SP3497E which enhances Exar's SP349x transceiver series. With standard pin out compatibility, these new devices not only support current 20Mbps applications, but can be extended to 32Mbps levels for next generation industrial automation, security networks, process control, plant environmental control, remote sensing and metering applications. The SP3495E/96E/97E transceiver series is synergistic with Exar's full interface product offering including other RS-485/RS-422, RS-232 and multiprotocol transceivers plus a variety of innovative Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitters (UARTs) giving customers a wide array of connectivity solutions from one manufacturer.

"These new devices offer robust ESD protection, advanced fail-safe feature, and hot swap glitch protection - critical features for precision control of motor positioning in factory automation systems with high speed communication," said Levent Ozcolak, vice president, Interface Product Line.

Key Features

All three devices - the SP3495E/96E/97E are suitable for high speed bidirectional communication on multipoint and multidrop bus transmission lines. They are designed for balanced data transmission and comply with both RS-485 and RS-422 EIA Standards. Each device contains one differential driver and one differential receiver. The family offers several choices: half-duplex, full-duplex or full-duplex with enable/shutdown. Separate enable pins control the driver and receiver independently or may be externally connected together as a direction control. The series operates from a single 3.3V power supply and loads the data bus only half as much as a standard RS-485 unit-load. This allows up to 64 devices to be connected simultaneously on a bus without violating required RS-485 signal margin and without using repeaters. Excessive power dissipation caused by bus contention or by shorting outputs to ground or a voltage source is prevented by short circuit protection and thermal shutdown. This feature forces the driver output into high impedance state if the absolute value of the output current exceeds 250mA or if junction temperature exceeds 165(degrees) C.

The advanced fail-safe feature guarantees a logic-high receiver output if the receiver's differential inputs are shorted, open-circuit, or if they are shunted by a termination resistor. All inputs and outputs have ESD protection. Bus-pins are ESD protected up to (+ -- -)15kV Human Body Model.

"Taking advantage of standard pin outs, low power consumption, and advanced features, customers can easily migrate to high speed applications with significantly reduced time-to-market," said Hensen Wong, technical marketing manager, Interface Product Line.

Interface Products

Exar has one of the broadest portfolios of high-performance interface solutions including UARTs, serial transceivers - RS-232, RS-485, and multi-protocol -- the industry-first wireless UART chipset solution, as well as, integrated UART/transceiver combinations. For chip-to-chip or system-to-system connections, Exar's single and multi-channel interface ICs provides immediate competitive advantages to designers: low power, reduction in board space requirements, increased bandwidth capacity, and enhanced product features. Interface devices are found practically everywhere including point-of-sale (POS) terminals, digital televisions, industrial automation equipment, handheld devices, and networking environments.

Prices, Packages, Availability and Additional Information

Samples of the SP3495E and SP3496E are available now in an 8-pin SOIC package supporting the -40(degrees) C to +85(degrees) C temperature range. In addition, samples of the SP3497E are available in a 14-pin SOIC package supporting the -40(degrees) C to +85(degrees) C temperature range. Lead-free and RoHS compliant packages are available. In 1k piece quantities the SP349xE family is $1.25.
