SMD IR Receiver offers 300 µsec of reaction time.

Press Release Summary:

Optimized for sensor and light barrier systems, Compact SMD IR Receiver TSOP5038 is insensitive to supply voltage ripple and EMI noise, and offers low supply current of 0.85 mA typical at 5 V. It offers high fixed gain in all ambient light environments, 0.5 mW/sqm typical irradiance, and supply voltage of 2.7-5.5 V. RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC compliant unit features photo detector and preamplifier, as well as internal IR filter that suppresses visible light.

Vishay Releases Compact SMD IR Receiver with 0.5-mW/sqm Typical Irradiance and 300-µs Reaction Time for Sensor and Light Barrier Systems

Fixed Gain Device is Insensitive to Supply Voltage Ripple and EMI Noise, and Offers Low Supply Current of 0.85 mA

Malvern, Pennsylvania - Jan. 16, 2009 - Vishay Intertechnology (NYSE: VSH) broadens its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of a compact SMD IR receiver optimized for sensor and light barrier systems. With its fast reaction times, insensitivity to supply voltage ripple and EMI noise, and low supply current of 0.85 mA typical at 5 V, the fixed gain device provides consistent performance in all ambient light conditions.

In mid- to long-range reflective sensor systems and IR light barrier systems, such as garage door openers, urinals, and other "presence of object" systems, gain control must be handled differently than in remote applications. In remote applications, the automatic gain control (AGC) adjusts the gain in response to ambient light levels, spurious noise, and other criteria in order for the receiver to continue responding to the data signal while rejecting stray noise. But variable gain is not desired in sensor applications, as this greatly complicates the design. In addition, sensor applications require fast reaction times in order to operate at a continuous 38-kHz signal.

The TSOP5038 solves both of these problems by offering a high fixed gain in all ambient light environments, and allows a short burst repetition time that results in a fast 300-µs reaction time. Continuous signals at 38 kHz or 38 kHz bursts may be used to drive the IR emitter. To simplify the design, an internal IR filter suppresses visible light.

To further simplify designs, the TSOP5038 features a photo detector and preamplifier in one package. The highly sensitive device offers a 0.5-mW/sqm typical irradiance and a supply voltage from 2.7 V to 5.5 V. The receiver is complaint with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.

Samples and production quantities of the TSOP5038 are available now, with lead times of eight weeks for large orders.
