New Larger Flexco® Rivet Conveyor Belt Fasteners Target Higher-Tension Mainline & Panel Belts In Mining

DOWNERS GROVE (IL), MAY 1, 2005 -- New Flexco® R9S, now the biggest size available in the Flexco SR™ Scalloped-Edge™ rivet-hinged conveyor belt fastener system, features a high-strength 8-rivet attachment, greater reachback, thicker plates and larger hinge pins for longer life on higher-tension belts with mechanical fastener ratings up to 2000 PIW (350 kN/m).

Developed for heavily loaded mainline and panel belts in underground and surface mining, the new R9S fasteners are stamped from 300 Series stainless steel 0.135" (3.5mm) thick, and accommodate belt thickness ranging from 5/8 to 1" (16mm to 25.5mm), running on conveyors with end-pulley minimum diameters of 42" (1050mm).

The R9S fastener grips the belt end between top and bottom plates, approximately 1˝ " (38mm) wide and joined at one end by two wide hinge loops sized to accept hinge pins 5/8 " or ľ " (16mm or 19mm) in diameter, depending on belt thickness. Flexco's patented Scalloped Edge design, featuring leading/trailing edges formed into a concave, scalloped shape with more-prominent edge coining (bevelling), allows the fastener plate ends to embed deeper into the belt cover with less effort, minimizing splice height. This helps produce a lower profile splice that passes more smoothly under belt cleaners and skirtboards.

A viewport in each fastener top plate lets the installer see when the belt end is properly butted against a belt stop formed into the fastener's bottom plate, for accurate, uniform positioning across the squared belt end, producing a straighter splice that promotes a truer-tracking belt.

Fasteners are supplied in strips of 6 or 7 plates each, which helps assure uniform plate spacing and alignment, packaged in four combinations to splice standard belt widths of 48”, 54", 60", 72" or 84" (1200 mm, 1350 mm, 1500 mm, 1800 mm or 2130 mm). Strips feature break-away bridges between fasteners, which allow any number of fasteners to be broken off to trim the strip to any non-standard belt width. These bridges also let new splices conform automatically to troughing idlers on first pass.

Hammer-driven, self-setting rivets pioneered by Flexco simplify and speed installation. Eight different rivet lengths, to suit various belt thicknesses, are made of Type 409 Stainless Steel and pre-fitted with break-away pilot nails that penetrate the belt carcass without damage. A portable installation tool clamps belt end and fastener strips in precise alignment while the rivets are driven.

The Flexco MSRT9 multiple-rivet driving system uses pre-loaded guide blocks to hold 32 rivets in alignment over the rivet holes of four adjacent R9 fastener plates. The standard Flexco SR five-pronged drive rod is used to drive and set five rivets simultaneously, then turned 180 degrees to drive and set the remaining three rivets.

Flexco, headquartered near Chicago, IL/USA, services the world's belt conveyors through subsidiaries operating in California, Michigan, Mexico, England, Germany, Australia, and South Africa. Founded in 1907 and certified under ISO-9001:2000 International Standards for Quality Management, the company markets its broad line of products through a worldwide network of distributors, under the brand names Flexco®, Alligator®, Clipper® and Tatch-A-Cleat®.
