Coplanar Combination Provides High Density Interconnection for ATCA Zone 3

ETTERS, Pa. (February 1, 2005) – FCI has added a right-angled receptacle to its AirMax VS® connector range which, combined with the existing right angled header, creates a complete coplanar interconnect solution for Advanced TCAâ„¢ Zone 3.

Supporting custom interconnects between the main card and direct mate rear transition module, the mated pair offers a signal line density of 25 differential pairs per linear centimeter of board length.

The 150 position Coplanar AirMax VS (Virtual Shield) connectors are composed of 10 insert molded leadframe assembly (IMLA) columns, which each provide five differential signal pairs. As all signal lines and IMLAs are isolated from each other by air, interleaving shields are not required and insertion loss and crosstalk are minimized.

Within the dimensional constraints of ATCA Zone 3, up to four Coplanar AirMax VS connectors can be placed side by side to provide a total of 200 high speed differential signal pairs.
The flexibility of the IMLA structure means that column-to-column spacing within an AirMax VS connector can be adjusted to reduce the number of card layers and to further improve the electrical performance of interconnections while maintaining impedance at 100 ohms.

AirMax VS products previously announced include 3-, 4- and 5-pair headers and receptacles offered with a variety of IMLA column counts and spacings. Future product introductions include AirMax VS modules that incorporate FCI’s patented BGA connector termination technology.

About the AirMax VS® Connector System

The AirMax VS® connector system offers high speed computing and network system designers more versatility in structuring their backplane signal routing due to its use of air as the dielectric between adjacent conductors. This one-of-a-kind solution facilitates high signal density while exhibiting the industry’s lowest insertion loss and lowest crosstalk, all without the use of costly and space-consuming metal shields. AirMax VS’s® Insert Molded Leadframe Assembly (IMLA) enables the same connector to be used for Differential Pair signals, Single Ended signals or power. It is the only high speed backplane connector that allows for any allocating of signals within one connector, so customers’ systems can grow from 2.5 Gb/s to 25 Gb/s without necessitating redesign of the basic platform.
