Siemens Safety Remote Breaker Racking System Is Designed To Save Lives, Reduce Injuries From Fault Explosions

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (March 21, 2002) Siemens Energy & Automation has introduced the SARRACS safety remote breaker racking system that could save operator lives and avoid injury during breaker change out.

The SARRACS safety remote racking system is designed to allow operators to perform racking procedures from a distance of up to 40 feet away from the cell instead of in front of the cell and within a breaker's flash boundary.

Though OSHA and NFPA regulations require that personnel wear full-body flash suits during racking procedures on an energized system, suited operators remain vulnerable to intense heat, percussive forces and airborne debris from a fault explosion.

A SARRACS unit eliminates the need for special personal protection equipment. It is portable weighing only about 200 lbs and utilizes a Siemens S7-200 PLC for digital position control and customized position-torque control to help prevent equipment damage.

SARRACS is designed to work with most medium voltage switchgear breakers in a utility or industrial environment. It is programmable to allow for varying torque profiles and mechanical requirements and is mechanically adjustable to allow for different breakers in the same line-up.

Features and options include a hand-held operator's remote control station, auto reverse, speed control and ramp up/ramp down. Ball bearing wheels, casters and transport handles enhance portability.
