September 9, 2002 - Model ROC809 combines Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), Flow Computer, and PLC capabilities. Gas flow calculations use AGA 3 for orifice metering, AGA 7/ISO 9951 for turbine metering, and AGA 8/ISO 9951 for compressibility. PID loop control is configurable for up to 16 control loops. Up to 6 Function Sequence Table (FST) controls let users develop control strategies using logic, math, comparison, time-related, control-related, database, and general command sets.

Emerson's New ROC809 Combines RTU, Flow Computer, and PLC Capabilities in a Single Device

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (AUGUST 19, 2002) -- The ROC809 is the newest addition to Emerson Process Management's family of Remote Operations Controllers, offering outstanding flexibility in
meeting a wide range of field applications. It combines into one package the ruggedness, low power consumption, and broad communications capabilities of an RTU (Remote Terminal Unit), the audit trails and historical data archival of a Flow Computer, and the scalability, speed and control of a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

The ROC809 comes standard with a comprehensive applications package that addresses a wide range of applications. Gas flow calculations use AGA 3 for orifice metering, AGA 7 / ISO 9951 for turbine metering, AGA 8/ ISO 9951 for super compressibility, and comply with API Chapter 21. Up to 12 meter runs can be measured. Comprehensive PID (proportional, integral, and derivative) loop control is configurable for up to 16 control loops. And, Function Sequence Table, or FST control, lets users
develop control strategies using logic, math, comparison, time-related, control-related, database, and general command sets. Up to six FSTs can be implemented.

The optional DS800 Development Suite is a powerful programming tool that lets users create custom control strategies using any of six programming languages. Five are IEC 61131-3 graphical
programming languages and include sequential function chart, functional block diagram, ladder diagram, structured text, and instruction list. A graphical flow chart programming language is also provided. Programs developed using IEC 61131-3 are reusable on different platforms, eliminating the need for reprogramming.

Experienced programmers can implement control strategies into the ROC809 using the C or C++ languages. Emerson provides a library of commands that are used with off-the-shelf programming
tools to interface to the ROC809s database. The User C/C++ support for the ROC809 was developed so programmers do not need an extensive knowledge of the firmware architecture. And the powerful ROC809 operating system is designed to prevent other applications from conflicting with C/C++ programs.

The ROC809 interfaces to a wide variety of field devices using low-density I/O Modules that plug into expansion slots. These modules have been designed for accuracy, ruggedness, and survivability, and their low point count design allows I/O to be closely matched to the application for better cost effectiveness. They are highly resistant to electrical noise and lightning-induced transients, wiring errors, and other problems that typically cause I/O device failures. Each module makes extensive use of optical (electrical) isolation to dramatically improve reliability and virtually eliminate power and grounding interactions and signal line surges and transients.

The ROC809 is designed to blend into almost any system environment by virtue of its wide range of communications and networking options. With its optional high-speed Ethernet capability, users can effectively extend their company's local area network (LAN) to their fields. With an Ethernet connection, more data is transferred at a lower cost than with conventional communications methods. Ethernet also makes it possible to network ROC809s, giving users tremendous I/O and control capabilities for large applications.
