CPFilms Announces Specialty Release Films For Medical Applications

Fieldale, Va., November 09, 2005 - CPFilms, Inc., a leading manufacturer of precision-coated films for electronics, medical, high-technology, industrial, commercial and solar control applications, offers polyester based release liners that are especially well suited for medical applications. They include UV5A, UV10, UV12, UV30, UV50 and UV100 UV-cured, and S10 fluorosilicone release, the latter for use with silicone based pressure sensitive adhesives and other materials.

Each of these liners is included in a Drug Master File (DMF) filing to the US Food & Drug Administration, submitted late in 2004. According to Doug Goldstein, new business development manager for CPFilms, the DMF filing is important for CPFilms and other companies that wish to supply medical products manufacturers with release films that meet stringent health and safety standards. "This DMF filing enables us to provide confidential information to the FDA, which can then review the liner's acceptability for use as a component in coated medical substrates. Once approved, this is information that the FDA can report to prospective users of our products," he said. This reduces the product development cycle for potential manufacturers desiring to test these release films.

Meanwhile, while awaiting review, toxicity testing was performed by an independent laboratory and all the liners included in the FDA submission clearly passed.

Among the medical applications cited by Goldstein that often require the use of release films are transdermal drug delivery systems, disposable diagnostic test materials, wound closure materials, adhesive bandages and medical tapes, among others.

CPFilms' Clearsil(R) product line includes cleanroom coated, optically clear, contaminant- and scratch-free release films that deliver aesthetic characteristics and consistent release, as well as optimum transfer or release of the adhesive's qualities needed to satisfy exacting performance specifications. In some cases, a colored film substrate may be needed for identification, which CPFilms can supply in the form of a deep-dyed release film that maintains similar performance characteristics to optically clear films.

The manufacture of Clearsil(R) release films is carried out at CPFilms' manufacturing facilities in Fieldale, Virginia. Manufacturing is performed in four basic steps: mix making, application, curing, and slitting and packaging. CPFilms' plant and pilot plant manufacturing operations and product quality control procedures are detailed in the company's Standard Procedure Manual, and are predicated on the requirements of the company's ISO-9001 system.
