GE's New Immersion(TM) LED Refrigerated Display Lighting Gives Retailers Big Energy Savings, Warmer Colors

CLEVELAND, OH. - The new, high-efficiency Immersion(TM) LED Refrigerated Display Lighting RV30 Series from Lumination-the GE Consumer & Industrial business that invented the LED refrigerated display lighting category-increases energy savings because it now runs on just 29 watts per door. Such low operating wattage reduces energy consumption from case lighting up to 84 percent compared with T10 VHO fluorescent systems-145 watts for the RV30 Series compared with 894 watts for T10 VHO in a typical 5-door case. This wattage reduction eases the workload of the compressor that removes heat from inside the case, providing up to an additional 341 watts of indirect energy savings.

The Immersion(TM) RV30 Series delivers 29 percent more energy savings and 28 percent more light versus Lumination's early-generation LED solutions. The new LED system's 50,000-hour rated life also significantly reduces maintenance costs and hassles.

"Our Immersion(TM) RV30 Series is a natural progression for this GE solution," says Philip Fritz, product manager of LED display lighting at Lumination. "Our LED refrigerated display case lighting installation at Walmart represents the single largest application of white LEDs replacing fluorescent lighting in a retail display setting. We're building on that legacy of excellence by giving our customers an improved solution that speaks to their needs for GE quality, enhanced energy efficiency and warmer colors."

Immersion(TM) is a new brand name GE uses for LED lighting systems in the retail display lighting category, which includes refrigerated cases.

With greater efficiency than any previous GE LED refrigerated display lighting system, the Immersion(TM) RV30 Series, a product of ecomagination, allows retailers to create the right look throughout the entire case area with new, warmer color temperatures and a bright, uniform light. It is available in 3500K, 4100K and 5000K color temperatures that deliver up to 1150 lux (Initial illuminance (lux) +/- 15% based on typical in-store performance). The system's innovative optic design keeps light directed on the displayed packages, while reducing distracting glare and light spill. Its lights are optimized for a 4 to 6 inch (102 to 152 mm) throw distance to enable a 70-percent light level uniformity across the package facings. The system contains no lead, mercury or glass for easier handling and disposal. It is also RoHS and NSF compliant.

Calculating benefits
If a retailer replaces T8 fluorescent lamps with Immersion(TM) RV30 LED light fixtures in 100 refrigerated case doors in each of its 100 stores, the reduction in energy usage could save over $548,000 and reduce CO2 emissions by over 5.2 million pounds annually over the long 50,000-hour rated life of the LED system (assumes 24/7 operation at a cost of $0.10/kwh). It's the equivalent of planting over 650 acres of trees each year.

More than 20 large-scale customer installations of Lumination's LED Refrigerated Display Case Lighting system are at work worldwide. Eight of the top 10 U.S. grocers/supermarkets are testing or using the system. Lumination has the world's largest installed base of LED refrigerated display case lighting: more than 350,000 light bars installed with a low warranty return rate of less than 0.045 percent.
