Multirate, Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) Serializer/Deserializer Reduces Cost and Saves Power

Multirate, clock and data recovery (CDR) serializer/deserializer reduces cost and saves power

Multirate CDR SerDes for GPON and BPON ONT Applications

oThe MAX3886 is a multirate, clock and data recovery (CDR) serializer/deserializer with data rates up to 2.488Gbps.

oThis device provides significant cost and power savings for the highly competitive fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) market.

oTo save cost and power, the MAX3886 combines the functions of three separate ICs within a single integrated device.

oThis device is ideal for the optical network terminals (ONTs) used in broadband and gigabit passive optical networks (BPON and GPON).

SUNNYVALE, CA-May 8, 2008-Maxim Integrated Products (PINK OTC MARKETS: MXIM) introduces the MAX3886 multirate, CDR serializer/deserializer (SerDes) with data rates up to 2.488Gbps. By combining the functions of three ICs (clock and data recovery, serialization, and deserialization) within a single, highly integrated device, the MAX3886 provides significant cost and power savings to manufacturers of passive optical network (PON) equipment for the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) market. Consequently, this device is ideal for the optical network terminals (ONTs) used in FTTH installations such as Verizon FiOSŪ.

To enhance design flexibility, Maxim's proprietary CDR technology enables the MAX3886 to use either a low-cost, 19.44MHz, SMD-type crystal resonator or an external LVCMOS source as a frequency reference, while still providing best-in-class jitter tolerance to support forward-error correction. Additionally, the upstream rate can be configured to be equal to the downstream rate (symmetric operation) or as a submultiple of the downstream rate (asymmetric operation).

The MAX3886 operates from a 3.3V supply and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range. It is available in an 8mm x 8mm, 56-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $9.97 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit is available to speed designs.
