ORTEC Launches the IDM-200 Interchangeable Detector Module

Compact, High-Resolution Radiation Detector Offers Modular Solution for Integrated Nuclear Security Applications

Oak Ridge, TN – The ORTEC Products Group of AMETEK Advanced Measurement Technology Solutions has introduced the IDM-200 Interchangeable Detector Module as the latest addition to ORTEC’s Detective-ASP (Advanced Spectroscopic Portal) Series of advanced nuclear identifiers for Homeland Security and other industrial radiation detection applications,

The compact ORTEC IDM-200 is suitable for many applications, including nuclear security (portals monitors, rail monitors, integrated X-ray and nuclear monitoring systems), industrial (scrap steel, landfills), and environmental (in-situ surveys, emergency response, spectroscopic area monitors).  Developed from ORTEC high-purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detection technology, the IDM-200 detector is a highly integrated, modular, scalable, high-resolution and highly sensitive radiation detection module that can be easily integrated into new and existing security applications.

“The new IDM-200 is ultra-compact, yet does not compromise on nuclear identification quality in terms of resolution, and sensitivity,” comments Johnny Long, ORTEC Product Manager for Homeland Security Products. “The IDM-200 module greatly simplifies the complex task of designing reliable and effective nuclear security monitoring systems, while the availability of software toolkits greatly facilitates system integration.”

The IDM-200 offers significantly improved nuclear threat identification performance versus other types of radiation detectors. It provides users and system designers with a “smart” instrument that can be easily integrated into many of their applications.  The compact unit incorporates a very large area HPGe detector and offers such features as Auto-Calibration, “hot-swap” replacement, low maintenance requirements, and continuous duty high-temperature operation.

“ORTEC prides itself on responding to customers’ needs. We recognized a need for an ‘all-in-one’ rugged radiation detector module to build into full-featured, reliable nuclear monitoring systems that are not sensitive to X-ray cargo and EDS systems. The detector can be easily adapted for use by X-ray and radiation monitoring companies looking to advance their performance capabilities,” notes Frank Vorwald, ORTEC business unit manager.

Drawing on ORTEC’s 50 years of nuclear instrument design expertise, the IDM-200 is a powerful integration platform for building highly sensitive radiation identification solutions.  Pedestrian and freight portal monitors, non-intrusive X-ray scanning systems, straddle carriers and air cargo screening systems are just a few examples of systems that benefit from the addition of the new IDM-200.  More information on the IDM-200 can be downloaded at http://www.ortec-online.com/download/IDM-200-P.pdf.

The ORTEC Products Group is the leading supplier of high-resolution, HPGe-based radiation identifiers with more than 50 years of experience in the design and manufacture of highly sensitive radiation detectors used by government and industrial laboratories, nuclear facilities and medical research and in nuclear safeguards.
