Compact Server Squeezes High CPU and GPU Density Into 2U Rack-Mount

High-Density Stream Computing Server, the NextStream, Coming Soon from NextComputing

NASHUA, NH - September 16, 2009 - NextComputing, manufacturers of high-performance, portable workstations and servers, announces the NextStream, a high-density stream computing server. In a compact 2U rackmount form factor, the NextStream is best suited to mission-critical applications requiring high-throughput data streaming and/or a mix of traditional CPU processing and GPU parallel processing. NextComputing's modular "FleXtreme" architecture maximizes the system's processing power per rack unit and performance per watt, yet maintains open standards flexibility.

This versatile server's uses include:

  • geospatial image processing
  • 3D rendering
  • video and audio encoding
  • high-volume financial transaction processing
  • military simulation and training

The NextStream supports either (3) single-width blades or (1) single and (1) dual-width blade. Each blade contains up to (2) AMD Opteron(TM) or Intel® Xeon® processors, for a maximum of (6) processors per 2U chassis. In addition, the dual-width blade option supports a full-length PCI Express slot and a full-length PCI-X 64-bit slot and up to 5TB (terabytes) of additional storage.

    Other features include:

  • (2) removable 2.5" SATA 7200 RPM, SAS 10K/15K RPM, or SSD drives per blade
  • (4) PCI Express 2.0 expansion slots (full-height, ¾ length) - Dual-wide GPU ready
  • an integrated management PC module with embedded CPU, RAM, storage, graphics, and I/O
  • a modular, redundant 2+1 hot-swappable 1140W power supply
  • (2) Gigabit ports per blade plus an additional two integrated 4-port Gigabit Ethernet switches

Customers can configure the NextStream in multiple ways to achieve maximum performance using a combination of CPU, GPU, and I/O, and easily scale upward by networking multiple systems together using its on-board network switching capabilities.

The NextStream also complements NextComputing's focus on mobile computing, represented by its NextDimension and Vigor series portable workstations. Although housed in a traditional rack-mount enclosure, the NextStream system is well-suited for roll-away mobile rack uses since its dense design consolidates multiple servers into a single piece of hardware.

The NextStream will be shipping in the first quarter of 2010. Please address inquiries to sales@nextcomputing.com.
