Quad-Output, High-Voltage EL Lamp Driver with I²C Interface Provides Optimal Brightness and Reduces Noise

Quad-output, high-voltage, EL lamp driver has I²C interface.

SUNNYVALE, CA-July 9, 2009-Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX14521E, a ±15kV ESD-protected, quad-output driver for multiple electroluminescent (EL) lamps. This EL driver utilizes an inductor-based boost converter to generate a high 300VP-P (max) voltage for maximum EL lamp brightness. A high-voltage, full-bridge output converts this high voltage to the AC waveform required to drive an EL lamp. To maximize design flexibility, the MAX14521E features an I²C interface for adjusting many different settings including output voltage, frequency, boost frequency, and waveform shape. Because of its I²C interface, this device has a very low component count, which saves board space and reduces cost. The MAX14521E is ideal for cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs, and other applications that require bright, efficient, even backlighting.

The MAX14521E provides multiple customization options that enable designers to optimize the performance of this driver for specific EL lamps. It features a proprietary acoustic-noise-reduction circuit that controls the output waveform to reproduce sine waves, thus enabling quiet EL backlight operation. This same ability also ensures a very bright, efficient output. In addition, the MAX14521E allows independent control of each lamp, including individual dimming and output modulation through an audio input for dynamic lighting effects.

Fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended temperature range, the MAX14521E is available in a tiny, 4mm x 4mm, 24-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $1.50 (1000-up, FOB USA).
